Regular Season Winds Down As Panthers Host Alcorn State Thursday Night

The Prairie View A&M Panthers return home for the start of their final two regular season games as they'll host Alcorn State Thursday night at 7p.m. in the Baby Dome.  The contest will be shown live on PANTHERVISION and also broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.

The Panthers made huge strides in the SWAC standings last weekend after sweeping both Alabama State and Alabama A&M on their respective homecourts for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.  As a result, the Panthers are in the driver's seat for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SWAC Tournament and can solidify the seed with wins in their final two home games.  If the Panthers attain the No. 2 seed, it would mark their highest tourney seed since attaining the No. 1 spot in 2003.

Senior Jourdan DeMuynck enters Thursday's game on a tear as he's the reigning SWAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week.  The 6-6 senior from San Leandro, Calif. earned his first weekly honor as a Panther after averaging 22 points and nine rebounds in PV's past two games against Alabama State and Alabama A&M.  He has led the Panthers in scoring in 16 of the team's 29 games and has eight double-doubles this season.

DeMuynck is the team's leading scorer and rebounder with 15.1 points and 6.5 rebounds. Fellow senior Carl Blair follows with 9.9 points and a team-high 4.7 assists.

Alcorn State began SWAC play as a team to reckon with by winning six of their first nine conference games in its second season under head coach Luther Riley.  However, the Braves took a wrong turn during the second half of SWAC play and dropped six of their next seven games which slipped them down the SWAC standings.  Alcorn State, which beat PV 68-54 to open league play in January, enters Thursday's game on a five-game losing streak which dates back to Feb. 9.

Guard Marquiz Baker leads the way with 16.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while fellow guard LeAntwan Luckett follows with 13.1 points and four rebounds per outing.
