Lady Panthers Pin Down Alcorn State, Clinch Fourth Seed In SWAC Tourney

BOX SCORE The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team handled business on Thursday evening in a 61-59 win over Alcorn State, clinching the fourth seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament after improving to 10-7 in the SWAC standings.

Moving up into the third seed is not an option for the Lady Panthers, but they are riding the high of a four-game win streak. This streak is currently the longest streak in the SWAC since Texas Southern suffered a loss at home to Southern.

In a game that featured seven lead changes and three ties, the Lady Panthers managed to maintain a tight but steady lead following a jumper by senior forward Latia Williams to take a 47-46 lead with 7:16 remaining. Prairie View A&M eventually took a five-point lead with 2:42 remaining after senior guard Kiara Etienne drained a three off of an assist by sophomore guard Jeanette Jackson to go up 58-53. Alcorn responded with a 6-2 run of its own, which was capped off by a Renelle Richmond basket with 10 seconds left in the game to cut her team's deficit to 60-58. Richmond was fouled on the shot by sophomore center Larissa Scott, who fouled out. She knocked down the foul for the Lady Braves, giving Prairie View A&M a scare with the score at 60-59.

On the next possession Jackson was fouled and sent to the line where she hit one of her two free throws with eight seconds left. The Lady Panthers were able to limit the Braves on two shot attempts in the final eight seconds to hold on for the win.

Etienne finished with a team-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-7 showing from downtown. Williams turned in 14 points with four rebounds and three assists, while Jackson had eight points, five assists and four steals for the Lady Panthers. Tierra Frost had a game-high 22 points in a losing effort for Alcorn state followed by Richmond's 14-point performance.

The Lady Panthers will try to extend their win streak to five games on Saturday in a 3 p.m. game vs. Southern in the William Nicks Building. Seniors Latia Williams, JaQuandria Williams and Kiara Etienne will be honored before their final home game in the Baby Dome.
