GARLAND - The Lady Panthers enter the Southwestern Athletic Conference riding the high of five-game winning streak and hungry to keep intact the level of play that has made them one of the hottest teams in the SWAC. Prairie View A&M will try to keep two streaks going as it faces Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Special Events Center in Garland, Texas.
Not only have the Lady Panthers won five-consecutive games heading into the SWAC Tournament, but the program is undefeated (6-0) in the SWAC Tournament under the watch of third-year coach Toyelle Wilson, including a 4-0 record in conference tournament openers and championship games.
Senior forward and recently-crowned SWAC Player of the Year Latia Williams has an even more impressive streak going. She has yet to lose a SWAC Tournament game while being active on the Prairie View A&M roster and has a 9-0 record with three SWAC Tournament Championships to her name. She won her first championship on March 14, 2009 after her team defeated Southern 74-49 in Birmingham, Ala.
Prairie View A&M's focus, however, is not on the past. It has to find a way to defeat Jackson State, a team that beat the Lady Panthers 62-56 in their last contest on Feb. 11. Prairie View A&M will have to figure out how to stop the likes of forwards Ayanna Hardy-Fuller and Tiffany Kellum. Hardy-Fuller picked up 18 points and eight rebounds vs. the Lady Panthers in her team's win, and Kellum is a First Team All-SWAC post player that averages 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds.
Williams, who is averaging 12.9 points and 8.9 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers will have to keep Jackson State honest defensively with her midrange game, while sophomore guard Jeanette Jackson, who is averaging 11.2 points, 3.0 assists and 2.9 steals during the Lady Panthers' five-game winning streak will do her best to cause havoc with her ability to penetrate and draw contact or finish at the rim.
