BOX SCORE
Senior night didn't go as planned as Southern University stormed out to a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back in a 61-39 victory over Prairie View A&M in the regular season finale for both teams at the William Nicks Building on Saturday night.
Two nights after suffering a setback to the hands of Alcorn State, the Panthers came out energized to begin the game as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead less than five minutes in as senior guard Jourdan DeMuynck scored nine of the team's 11 points. Southern rallied back and drew to within three points four minutes later but PV kept a two-possession lead at the 10:34 mark on Jules Montgomery's tip-in.
Southern outscored the Panthers 6-0 over the next few minutes to claim a 15-14 lead but PV briefly reclaimed a 17-15 advantage shortly thereafter on DeMuynck's trey. However, the Panthers went cold from that point and Southern heated up en route to a 12-0 surge which moved the Jaguars ahead 27-17 with 1:32 remaining. DeMuynck, who scored 16 of Prairie View's 20 first-half points, hit three free throws to close PV's deficit to 27-20 but SU scored the final three points of the half via the charity stripe to claim a 30-20 halftime lead.
The Panthers closed to within 11 points at the 16:55 mark of the second stanza following Ronald Wright's three-point play. Southern upped its lead back to 16 but PV continued to fight as they went on an 8-2 surge to draw within 10 points at 43-33 with 12:18 on the clock. Southern's Derick Beltran hit a big three-pointer on the ensuing possession to answer PV's run and it was a repeat of the first half as SU outscored the Panthers 18-6 to close out the game.
DeMuynck was the lone player in double figures for the Panthers with 18 points along with eight rebounds. Fellow senior Mayol Riathin grabbed eight rebounds in his home finale while also scoring six points. Four players scored in double figures for Southern with Malcolm Miller leading the way with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The regular season comes to an end as the Panthers finished in sixth place and will now turn their sights towards SWAC Tournament Play on March 14 in Garland, Texas. Due to two of the teams ahead of them in the SWAC standings not eligible for tourney play, the Panthers are unofficially the No. 4 seed in the SWAC Tournament as they finished tied with Alcorn State and Alabama State. As a result of all three teams finishing with 2-2 records against each other, the second tiebreak scenario in a three-way tie was the team's record against the tourney's top seed, which is Southern. Alcorn State claimed the tiebreaker and No. 3 seed between the three teams as they finished with a 1-1 mark against Southern. PV claimed the season series over Alabama State 2-0 to earn the fourth seed while ASU is the fifth seed.
Unofficially, the Panthers are slated to open tourney play next Thursday night at 8 p.m. in Garland, Texas.
