LONGVIEW, Texas - The Prairie View A&M softball team finished 2-3 this past weekend at the SWAC Round-up in Longview, Texas as they closed out the first half of league play against teams from the SWAC East.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 8, ALABAMA STATE 6
Prairie View A&M broke open a tie game with six runs in the fifth and sixth frames before holding on for dear life in the seventh to claim the win over Alabama State.
ASU hit a two-run homer in the top of the first before PV answered with RBIs from Shontel Lopez and Kelly Scruggs to knot the game at 2-all after one inning of play.
Both teams went scoreless over the next few frames until the fifth as Scruggs recorded her second RBI of the game to bring home Brenicia Woods. An ASU error led to PV's fourth run of the game followed by Sarina Rios' two-RBI single for the 6-2 advantage. Alabama State crossed home a run in the sixth to trail 6-3 but PV responded in the bottom half as Lopez drove in the team's seventh run on a fielder's choice followed by Scruggs' third RBI for the 8-3 lead. ASU put together a two-out rally in the seventh as they scored three runs but PV held on to claim the round-up opener.
Rios finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs while Scruggs drove in three RBIs on two hits. Falls improved to 5-2 on the mound with four strikeouts.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 7, ALCORN STATE 4
The Lady Panthers combined to score seven runs in the second and third innings and rode the arm of Lauren Grun en route to a 7-4 win over Alcorn State.
A balk by ASU led to PV's first run followed by freshman Peyton Simms' RBI single for a 2-0 lead. PV moved ahead 3-0 as Lexus Walker scored during Simms' steal attempt at second. ASU made a pitching change in the third and PV took advantage as Olivia Pace's RBI double scored Leanna Flores for the 4-0 lead. A wild pitch by the Lady Braves allowed Rios to score PV's fifth run of the game coupled with an Alcorn State illegal pitch for a 6-0 lead. Katelyn Den Beste rounded out the scoring for PV as her RBI single to center scored Simms for the 7-0 advantage. Alcorn State scored a pair of runs in the third and fifth frames but Grun held her own at the mound to seal the win for the Lady Panthers.
Simms finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Pace concluded the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Grun recorded eight strikeouts to pick up the win.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 5, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 3
Defending SWAC Champion Mississippi Valley State scored twice in the third and fifth innings to hold off the Lady Panthers for the 5-3 win.
The Devilettes used an early two-out homer in the first to claim an early 1-0 lead. PV responded in the second and jumped ahead 2-1 as Rios homered over the fence. The error bug hit PV at the wrong time in the third as they committed two errors which led to a pair of Devilette runs and a 3-2 deficit after three innings of action. The deficit increased to 5-2 as MVSU hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to inch further away from the Lady Panthers.
PV left two runners on base in the sixth and closed to within 5-3 in the seventh after Walker's homer. However, MVSU held on as PV couldn't manufacture any runs from that point to seal the game.
Rios finished 2-for-3 with a team-high two RBIs while Falls dropped to 5-3 on the season.
ALABAMA A&M 14, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 0
Nothing went right for the Lady Panthers on the final day of round-up action as Alabama A&M opened the day with a 14-0 win.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the top of the first and never looked back as PV would only mount three hits on the afternoon. AAMU scored three times in the third and combined to score three runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Sophomore pitcher Meah Maddox fell to 0-3 as she didn't make it out of the first inning while Simms, Alexis Lang and Alisa Navarro recorded hits for the Lady Panthers.
JACKSON STATE 9, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 1
A deadlocked ballgame turned into a nightmare for the Lady Panthers as Jackson State combined to score eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the 9-1 run-ruled game.
Pace hit a leadoff double for the Lady Panthers in the first and scored the game's first run on Navarro's RBI. JSU tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a solo homer before breaking the game open in the fourth as a leadoff homer led way to three runs and a 4-1 deficit. JSU played small ball in the fifth and moved ahead 5-1 before putting the game away with a three-RBI triple from Arial Siegal.
Pace finished 2-for-2 with a run scored while batting leadoff. Falls dropped to 5-4 as she was tagged with the loss.
The Lady Panthers return to action on Saturday as they'll host Langston at noon in Prairie View.
