Softball Struggles In Return To The Diamond

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BEAUMONT, Texas – It was a tale of two games as the Prairie View A&M softball team suffered through one bad inning in a 2-0 loss to Lamar on Tuesday. In the nightcap, nothing went right for the Lady Panthers as Lamar claimed the doubleheader sweep behind a less than memorable performance.

Lamar scored twice in the first inning and held off a late Lady Panther rally in the closing innings to claim a 2-0 win in the opener.

A leadoff walk came back to bite Prairie View A&M in the top of the first as Lamar scored its first run off an error. One batter later, Lamar's Candyce Carter drove in the game's second run with an RBI to left field.

With the wind blowing in heavily and hits hard to come by off of Lamar starter Tina Schulz, the Lady Panthers went to a small ball strategy by moving players over via the sacrifice bunt. The strategy was successful as four runners reached scoring position but the team failed to get the timely hit when needed. Freshman Rachel Rodriguez had two opportunities to break the game open in the fourth and sixth innings but the Lamar defense caught two hard-hit balls to end both innings.

Junior pitcher Cally Falls fell to 2-2 on the season while recording five strikeouts. Senior third baseman Kelly Scruggs recorded PV's lone hit of the afternoon.

In game two, Lamar scored five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as nothing went right for the Lady Panthers in a 24-1 loss.

The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Lady Panthers made several defensive lapses. Prairie View A&M loaded the bases in the top of the second and scored the game's first run off a Brenicia Woods' RBI single to left. The Lady Panthers had an opportunity to cut its deficit but allowed Lamar to get off the hook with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

From that point, it was all Lamar as they scored seven runs in the second to claim a 12-1 lead. Lamar put the game further out of reach with 12 runs over the next two innings to end the game.

Meah Maddox dropped to 0-1 on the season after lasting an inning. Scruggs and Woods both recorded a hit for the Lady Panthers.

Prairie View A&M won't return to action until March 14 as they'll host Our Lady Of The Lake in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Prairie View A&M.
