BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

GRAMBLING, La. - The Prairie View A&M softball team split a doubleheader with Grambling State on Saturday as they dropped the opener 4-2 before exploding with a 13-5 performance in game two.

In game one, Grambling State rallied back from 2-0 deficit with four runs over the final two innings to claim a 4-2 decision.

Freshman Peyton Simms scored the game's first run as she crossed home on Alisa Navarro's RBI in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead. In the fourth, PV moved ahead 2-0 as Katelyn Den Beste singled home Brenecia Woods from third base. Grambling State scored a run in the fifth to cut its deficit to 2-1 before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth that saw them load the bases with no outs. The Lady Panthers couldn't overcome the deficit as GSU starter Angela Perez recorded a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.

PV finished with a total of five hits with Den Beste and Navarro recording RBIs. Cally Falls fell to 8-6 on the season as she gave up eight hits with five strikeouts.

After a subpar performance in game one, PV returned to its old self in game two as they run-ruled Grambling State 13-5.

The Lady Panthers wasted little time in getting on the board in the first as Kelly Scruggs recorded a two-RBI double followed by Lexus Walker's RBI on a bases loaded walk. Grambling made it 3-1 in the second after Perez's RBI and hung around until the fourth as PV exploded with an eight-run inning to break the game open.

In the fourth, Simms doubled home Walker for the 4-1 lead followed by Navarro's two-RBI single. Woods and Flores both drove in runs before Walker blasted a shot over the left field wall for the 11-1 margin. GSU added a two-run homer in the bottom frame but PV added two more runs in the fifth as Navarro and Scruggs recorded RBIs. GSU scored twice in the fifth but it was too little too late as PV closed out the win in a run-rule.

Sarina Rios picked up her second win of the year on the mound while Navarro led the way with a 2-for-3 outing with three RBIs and three runs. Scruggs and Walker also had a solid game with three RBIs apiece.

The series ends on Sunday as the rubber match begins at noon in Grambling, La.
