Prairie View A&M was solid on both ends of the diamond as they opened SWAC West play with an impressive 11-2 five-inning win over Southern on Friday afternoon at the PV Softball Complex.
Sarina Rios' sacrifice fly led to the first run of the afternoon as PV led 1-0 in the second. However, the lead was brief in the top of the third as Southern's Shawntall Steamer hit a two-out homer over the wall for a 2-1 lead. Trailing by a run, Prairie View A&M freshman Alexis Lang responded and hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to move PV ahead 3-2 in the bottom of third . Three batters later, senior third baseman Kelly Scruggs got in on the action with a three-run homer to move Prairie View A&M on top 6-2.
Prairie View A&M continued to score in the fourth as Lang upped the lead to 7-2 with an RBI single followed by catcher Alissa Navarro's RBI double to center for a 8-2 advantage. Scruggs recorded a two-RBI double along with shortstop Leanna Flores' RBI to close out the scoring.
Senior pitcher Cally Falls cruised to her seventh win of the year as she only allowed one hit while striking out six batters. Scruggs finished 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs while Lang and Navarro finished with two hits each. Lang also tallied three RBIs at the plate.
The series concludes tomorrow as PV will host Southern in a noon doubleheader at the PV Softball Complex.
