DECATUR, Ala. - The 2013 SWAC Softball Tournament kicks off tomorrow morning with the No. 3 seed Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers battling No. 2 Mississippi Valley State at 11:30 a.m. on the grounds of Wilson Morgan Park Field No. 4.
Wednesday's matchup marks the second time both PV and Mississippi Valley State will meet this season as the Devilettes claimed a 5-3 win at the SWAC Round-up in Longview, Texas. The teams also battled each other in last year's SWAC Tournament with Mississippi Valley State claiming a 2-0 win in Birmingham, Ala. Prairie View will be in for a fight as MVSU is the defending SWAC Champion and has won seven SWAC Championships. The Lady Panthers have not defeated MVSU since the 2008 campaign and are seeking their first SWAC Softball title since 1998.
For the Lady Panthers to defeat the SWAC East's No. 2 seed, the team will need to rely on its offensive production as seven players have averages of .355 or better. Defensively, pitcher Cally Falls will be counted on heavily as the Needville, Texas native has nine of the team's 17 wins on the mound and a team-high 88 strikeouts.
The Lady Panthers are also paired with Texas Southern and Alcorn State in the double elimination bracket. Following Wednesday's game, PV will return to action either at 1 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and will face TSU or Alcorn State.
