BOX SCORE
DECATUR, Ala. - In the SWAC Tournament, anything can happen and today that theory proved true as Prairie View A&M knocked off Mississippi Valley State 6-2 in the first round of the SWAC Tournament at Wilson Morgan Park.
The Lady Panthers, who were on a nine-game losing streak prior to the tourney, wasted no time in making their presence known with a three-run first inning. Freshman leadoff hitter Peyton Simms tripled to opened the game and scored off Leanna Flores' RBI. Freshman Tiffany Robertson drew a bases loaded walk for a 2-0 lead followed by Rachel Rodriguez's RBI as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Simms once again reached base via an error to open the second and moved to second on Flores' single. Brenicia Woods attempted to bunt both runners over and her bunt turned into a three-run explosion as MVSU overthrew first and paved the way for all three runners to score for the 6-0 advantage.
MVSU loaded the bases with no outs in second but came up empty handed as PV starting pitcher Cally Falls pitched herself out of a bases loaded jam with three straight outs. From that point, PV did a solid job of holding its lead as Falls allowed only three hits the rest of the day to seal PV's first win over MVSU since 2008.
Shontel Lopez led PV with a 2-for-4 performance while Woods and Simms scored two runs each. Falls allowed only four hits while striking out three.
The Lady Panthers will battle Texas Southern on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
