Prairie View A&M Soccer Drops Season Opener In Heartbreaker

BEAUMONT, Texas - Prairie View A&M took a stand as it went into Lamar to face a team it had not defeated since 2009. The Lady Panthers tied the game in the 84th minute, but Lamar scored a game-winner in the 88th minute to take the season-opener 3-2.

The Cardinals took an early lead by scoring the first goal, and they ended up outshooting Prairie View A&M 10-3 in the first half. The Lady Panthers, however were efficient with their shots.

In the 37th minute Maria Sanchez struck back with a goal to tie the game. She struck the back of the net off of a header with a cross from Gabriela Ramos. Sanchez get revenge in the form of the goal after taking a shot from the forearm of a Lamar midfielder, forcing a stoppage of play.  

In the 56th minute Lamar took the lead again as Kimmy Albeno scored on a cross from Jeanette Hernandez.

In the 89th minute, the Lady Panthers went on the attack, and Angie Guillory fired a shot from about 17 yards out that missed just left of the goal. In the 84th minute, midfielder Celene Batrez came through in the clutch. She put the ball in the back of the net with some touch, taking a pass from Arianna Rountree.

However, Jennifer Yacuta scored off of a deflection pull away in heartbreaking fashion.

Prairie View A&M hits the road for San Antonio to play Incarnate Word at 12 p.m. on Sunday as it tries to bounce back from tis tough loss.
