The Lady Panthers dropped a nail-bitter in the 105th minute as shot from what looked to be out of striking range gave Nicholls State the edge. Prairie View A&M was defeated 2-1 in a sudden death extra period and fell to 0-4 on the season.
Spencer Valdespino caught Prairie View A&M defenders off guard with a shot from about 30 yards out that was kicked on a line to the back of the net. Lady Panthers goal keeper Sierra Golding was out of position and the Colonels took the game in heartbreaking fashion.
Prairie View A&M, however, made the first to strike in the match. In an awkward series of kicks and deflections sophomore forward Arianna Rountree was the last person to touch the ball in the 52nd minute before it inched into the opposing goal. She put the Lady Panthers up 1-0, while senior forward Angie Guillory and junior midfielder Celene Batrez were credited with assists.Â
The Lady Panthers defense held strong until Nicholls seized an opportunity in the 82nd minute. Kristy Tatom tapped in a goal off of a cross from Annie Newell to tie the game and send it into the extra period, in which the Colonels won in the closing moments.
Nicholls State improved to 3-0-1 on the season after the win. Golding was credited her first loss of the season for the Lady Panthers in the process.
Prairie View A&M will attempt to bounce back from the 0-4 start by picking up a win on the road at Sam Houston State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.Â
