BOX SCORE Junior outside hitter Candyce Alexander came through with a breakout performance to lift the Prairie View A&M volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 win over Grambling State and string together two-consecutive wins for the first time this season.
Alexander decimated the Grambling State defense en route to racking up 10 kills off of 25 total attacks and just two errors for a .320 attack percentage. The Lady Panthers kept it close in the first two matches, defeating Grambling 25-19 and then 25-22. However, in the third set Prairie View A&M ran through the Lady Tigers for a 25-13 victory to take the match 3-0.
The Prairie View A&M defense was also a major factor in the win. It tallied 22 total blocks with 20 block assists. It shows the progression of the team as a defensive unit, considering in the 2012 season the Lady Panthers had 116 block assists for the year. Alexander tied a career-high with five total blocks and complemented her play at the net with six digs. Junior middle blocker Jade Nelson, who leads the team with 50 total blocks, gave the Lady Tigers the proverbial Dikembe Mutombo "Not in my house" finger wag. She also had five total blocks.Â
Offensively for Prairie View A&M, sophomore right side Rachel Owens had the most efficient match. She finished second on the team with six kills on nine attacks and just one error for a .556 attack percentage.Â
The Lady Panthers will ride their two-game win streak into Baton Rouge, La. at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to face Southern, a team they defeated 3-0 to open the season on Aug. 30.
