Junior guard Montrael Scott nailed eight three-pointers for a career-high 28 points as Prairie View A&M claimed an important 71-62 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday evening in the Baby Dome.
The first few minutes featured a shooting clinic by both teams as they combined to drain seven three-pointers for an 18-15 PVAMU lead with 13:04 remaining. The Panthers held on to their lead over the next several minutes and led by as much as six (25-19) after Scott's fifth trey of the half. The Golden Lions closed to within 25-24 until a basket by Louis Munks upped the Panthers' lead back to three at 27-24. Marcel Mosley followed with a basket on its next possession but Munks brought down the house with a thunderous alley-oop off a Scott pass for the four-point margin. UAPB once again closed its gap to 29-27 but Scott continued his assault from the arc with his sixth trey of the night as PVAMU led 32-27. Scott's trey keyed an 11-0 run which sent the Panthers into the locker room on top 40-29.
Prairie View A&M's lead increased to 14 less than two minutes into the second half after a layup from Jules Montgomery. The Panthers led by as much as 16 following a free throw from Chapman and it seemed the Panthers would finally have an easy SWAC contest for the first time this season. However, the shots stopped falling and the turnovers began to accumulate for the Panthers from that point as UAPB went on a 13-8 run to draw within 54-46 with 10:44 on the clock.
The Panthers went back up by double figures after Munks' free throws but the Golden Lions narrowed their gap to 59-52 after a jumper from Mosley. Scott answered the call with his final three-pointer of the half for a double-digit lead and the Panthers held serve from that point to win their fourth SWAC contest of the year.
Scott had a career-high 28 points and seven rebounds while Munks scored 15 points. Chapman and Montgomery added 12 apiece while point guard Tre Hagood added five assists. Scott's eight three-pointers set a single-game high in the SWAC up to this point.
With the win, the Panthers defeated UAPB for the first time since 2012 and improve their winning streak to three games. The last time the Panthers won three straight SWAC contests occurred in 2010.
Prairie View A&M will host Mississippi Valley State on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
