Balanced Attack Leads Lady Panthers To Victory Over UAPB

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M had one of its most balanced efforts this season as five players scored in double figures en route to a 75-62 victory and its second consecutive win of the season in the William Nicks Building Saturday evening.

Both teams remained close to open the contest as neither team would lead by as much as two points over the first 15 minutes.  With Prairie View A&M ahead 22-20 at the 5:06 mark, the team bumped its lead to 27-20 with a 5-0 surge that was keyed by Taylor Overshown, Asha Hampton-Finch and Jeanette Jackson.  UAPB drew to within 27-25 after the surge but PVAMU responded with a trio of three-point leads over the next two minutes.  Ahead by six (34-28) with 1:11 remaining, UAPB drew to within 34-32 after Erin Campbell's shot but freshman Alexus Parker closed out the half with two free throws for a 36-32 advantage.

The Lady Panthers had a case of the turnover bug to open the second half as they committed seven turnovers within the first seven minutes.  As a result, UAPB turned PVAMU's misfortunes into a positive as they went on an 11-4 run to take a 43-21 lead with 13:16 left on the clock.  The lead was brief though as Jackson and Shamiya Brooks scored the next three points for a PVAMU lead until a jumper by UAPB"s Carlisha Walker tied the contest at 45-all.

With the contest tied, the Lady Panthers broke the game open with a 12-3 run as redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Scott nailed a pair of treys to start the run.  Ahead 57-48 with 9:26 left, UAPB drew to within six on a three-pointer from Charisse Carr but Brooks hit a layup followed by 1-of-2 free throws to up PVAMU's lead back to eight at 60-51.

However, UAPB refused to go away as they responded with a 5-0 surge over the next 1:10 to close within 60-56.  Sensing the momentum slipping to UAPB, senior point guard LaReahn Washington hit a free throw followed by a steal and a key assist on a three-point play from Brooks for a 64-58 advantage.  UAPB's Christina Lasane kept her team within striking distance from that point with four free throws followed by a basket from Carr to draw them within 66-62 with 2:20 remaining.

Once again, Washington continued to shine as the Houston native nailed two free throws on the ensuing possession coupled with a steal and assist several seconds later on Jackson's trey for a 71-62 PVAMU lead with 1:52 remaining.  UAPB turned the ball over on its next possession and Jackson sealed Prairie View A&M's second straight win with four free throws down the stretch for the victory.

The Lady Panthers had a balanced attack as five players hit in double figures led by Jackson's 14 points and five assists.  Asha Hampton-Finch followed with 12 points while Washington added 11 points, six assists and three steals.  Gabrielle Scott and Brooks both added 10 points with Brooks accounting for three blocks.

Prairie View A&M will host Mississippi Valley State on Monday night in a rematch of the 2013 SWAC Tournament Championship Game at 5:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
