Lady Panthers Win Third Straight With Impressive Win Over Mississippi Valley

BOX SCORE The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team continued its winning ways on Monday evening as LaReahn Washington and Gabrielle Scott combined to score 47 points as they held off Mississippi Valley State 77-59 inside the William Nicks Building on Monday evening.

Prairie View A&M blasted out of the gates to open the game with a 10-point lead (16-6) at the 12:34 mark.  The Devilettes trimmed their deficit to 20-14 five minutes later but Prairie View A&M turned on the jets with an 11-2 run as Washington was a one-woman wrecking crew with six points and a steal during that span.  A pair of turnovers by the Lady Panthers allowed MVSU to creep back in as the lead dropped to nine but once again, the Lady Panthers hit the gas pedal with a 14-2 surge to close out the half as Alexus Parker and Washington combined to score 11 points.

Ahead by 21 to open the second half, the contest took an odd turn as Mississippi Valley opened the half with two consecutive treys and a pair of free throws to close within 13 less than 1:25 in.  Washington stopped the bleeding with a timely three-pointer at the 18:01 mark  but the Devilettes kept charging as MVSU's Ashanti' Weathers nailed two consecutive treys to draw within 50-41 right before the first media timeout.

Sophomore Shamiya Brooks took over from that point with a three-point play after Valley's trey followed by another layup several minutes later to keep MVSU at bay.  MVSU's Weathers answered with a basket to cut its deficit to single digits but Washington and PVAMU's Gabrielle Scott combined to score the next five points to up the lead back to 60-46.

A costly technical foul by the Lady Panthers with 6:56 remaining allowed MVSU to sneak back into the contest as the lead fell to eight at 60-52.  After a series of missed baskets by both teams, junior point guard Jeanette Jackson hit a big three-pointer with 5:06 on the clock but PVAMU's double digit lead once again vanished as MVSUs Jasmyne Sanders answered with a bucket to draw them within 63-54 with 4:39 left.

On the ensuing possession, Gabrielle Scott took a pass from Washington and drained a trey to send the lead back into double digits.  MVSU misfired on its next possession and Scott sent the Devilettes home packing as the Vancleave, Miss. native scored seven points over the final 2:49 as PVAMU ended the game on an 11-5 crowd pleasing run.

Washington had her best game as a Lady Panther with a career-high 24 points, seven assists and three steals.  Scott followed with 23 points while Brooks completed the double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.  Even though her double-digit scoring streak came to an end, Jackson finished with eight points, seven assists and four steals.

Prairie View A&M has moved into a three-way tie for third with two games remaining in the first half of SWAC play.  The Lady Panthers will head back on the road this weekend with its Alabama swing which begins at Alabama State on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
