Southern Squeaks By Panthers In SWAC Opener

BOX SCORE
In a game reminiscent of last year's SWAC Tournament finale, a potential game-tying three-pointer by Prairie View A&M fell short with two seconds remaining as Southern held on a 60-57 win inside the Williams Nicks Building on Saturday evening.

The contest started off at a quick pace for Southern as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead as Malcolm Miler scored Southern's first five points. A trey by John Brisco cut PVAMU's deficit to 7-5 at the 16:46 mark but Southern moved back up by five (10-5) nearly a minute-and-half later on baskets by Trelun Banks and Miller.

Southern held on to its lead by the thinnest of margins over the next several minutes until Prairie View A&M's Montrael Scott put the team on its back beginning at the 8:12 mark. Prairie View A&M's leading scorer, Scott was fouled on a three-point attempt and nailed all three baskets to draw the Panthers within 15-13. Fourteen seconds later, Scott picked the pockets of Southern's Yondarius Johnson and tied the game at 15-all with 7:58 remaining.

Both Johnson and Scott traded three-pointers over the next minute and the Panthers claimed their first lead (21-18) of the contest at the 4:11 mark on two free throws by Scott. The Panthers clung to their lead over the next four minutes but relinquished its lead with five seconds remaining as the Jaguars' Damien Goodwin recorded a layup in the paint for a 24-23 halftime advantage.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the lead changed a total of 12 times over the final 20 minutes. Southern led for the first three minutes until Hershey Robinson nailed a three-pointer for a 28-26 lead. A layup by Calvin Godfrey pushed the lead back to Southern at the 16:15 mark but a jumper by John Brisco helped the Panthers regain a 30-29 margin 14 seconds later.

Southern's Tre Lynch answered with a basket to move the Jaguars back on top and they held on for the next minute until Demondre Chapman's bucket in the paint put PVAMU on top 34-33 with 14:33 remaining. From that point, the Panthers reclaimed the lead on a jumper by Jules Montgomery but SU regrouped and claimed a 40-36 edge at the 12:07 mark before the Panthers responded with a vengeance over the next few minutes.

Down 40-39 with 10:27 remaining, sophomore post Karim York drained a trey for a 42-40 PVAMU margin. Southern answered with a Johnson basket but Chapman held his ground and put the Panthers back on top 44-42 at the 7:51 mark. Miller and Louis Munks traded three-pointers over the next minute as PVAMU led 47-45 with 6:24 left. The Panthers' lead grew to as much as five points (50-45) with 5:26 left after three free throws from Scott.

Southern chipped away at PVAMU's lead over the next minute but the Panthers held on and increased their lead back to four at 53-49 after Chapman's basket. On the ensuing possession, Southern's Christopher Hyder banked home a basket to trail by one and after two missed baskets by the Panthers, the Jaguars reclaimed a 54-53 lead after Malcolm Miller's trey from the corner with 1:56 on the clock.

Prairie View A&M missed a layup on its next possession and Miller hit 1of-2 free throws to move SU ahead 55-53. The Panthers failed to answer offensively once again and Southern's Calvin Godfrey was perfect from the line as he went 4-for-4 over the next eight seconds to give SU a 59-53 margin with 25 seconds left. Brisco drove the length of the court after Godfrey's basket to trim PVAMU's deficit to 59-53 and after two missed free throws by SU's Javan Mitchell, Brisco drew PVAMU within 59-57 following a layup at the 15 second mark.

Needing to stop the clock, Brisco fouled Godfrey and he hit 1-of-2 free throws for a three-point SU margin with nine ticks remaining. With the door open to tie the game and no timeouts remaining, the Panthers nearly drove the length of the court but Brisco's game-tying three-point attempt fell short with two seconds remaining.

Scott led the Panthers with 17 points and five rebounds while Munks grabbed a team-high six boards. Godfrey and Miller led the Jaguars with 16 points apiece.

The Panthers close out their homestand on Monday night with a match-up versus Alcorn State beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
