John Brisco scored 21 second-half points as Prairie View A&M needed overtime to hold off Alcorn State 70-67 in a back-and-forth affair inside the William Nicks Building on Monday evening in Prairie View.
The Panthers clicked on all cylinders to open the contest as they stormed out to a 14-3 advantage seven minutes in.  During the surge, guards Louis Munks and Montrael Scott both ignited the Panthers as the Dallas area duo combined to score 10 points. However, Alcorn State awoke from its early doldrums and turned the tide as LeAntwan Luckett drained a trey at the 13:04 mark. PVAMU turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and ASU closed to within 14-8 on Stephan Raquil's jumper. Outside of a free throw by PVAMU's Reggis Onwukamuche, the Panthers struggled offensively over the next few minutes as ASU claimed an eight-point lead (23-15) during a 17-1 run.
Junior forward Hershey Robinson ended PVAMU's scoring drought with a trey at the 5:59 mark as the team found its scoring groove once again. The Panthers countered with an 11-2 run over the next five minutes en route to claiming a 26-25 lead with 1:48 left in the half. ASU regained the lead 30 seconds later off a putback by Tyrel Hunt and held on for a 29-27 lead entering the half.
Both teams traded baskets to open the second half and the Panthers reclaimed a 33-31 lead after a basket by Montrael Scott with 17:37 remaining. ASU's Octavius Brown put the team on his back shortly thereafter and scored five consecutive points to move the Braves on top 36-33. From that point, Alcorn State controlled the contest as its lead grew to as much as 47-40 with 8:58 remaining.
With the game slipping away, the Panthers regained their offensive stride as Brisco keyed an 18-8 run over the next five minutes as the Longview, Texas native scored 12 of the team's 18 points to help the Panthers claim a 58-55 margin with 3:53 left. Devontae Hampton moved Alcorn State back ahead with five consecutive points but two free throws by Brisco following a huge steal knotted the contest at 60 with 1:18 on the clock. The Panther defense picked the pockets of ASU twice over the final  54 seconds but had to settle for overtime as Brisco's game-winning basket fell short.
Scott opened OT with a bang as he nailed a three-pointer from the corner but ASU tied the contest once again following a free throw and a layup. The Panthers were the aggressor from that point as Brisco drained a trey and picked up a key block to preserve the 66-63 lead with 1:15 left. The lead increased to five on two occasions from that point but ASU refused to go away as Brown nailed a layup with four ticks left followed by a Tyrel Hunt steal which led to a game-tying attempt that nearly went in with no time remaining.
Brisco eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time since Nov. 14 as he led PVAMU with 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting in addition to five steals. Scott followed with 13 points and three assist while Hershey Robinson added 11 points. Jules Montgomery grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots while Demondre Chapman scored 11 points with six boards.
The Panthers return to action this Saturday night as they'll face SWAC rival Texas Southern at 7:30 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena on the TSU campus.
