Photo GalleryPRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers ended a two-match losing streak with a convincing three-set sweep Wednesday over Huston-Tillotson at William Nicks Arena.
Â
Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-9, and 25-20.
Â
The Lady Panthers (5-13) were simply too powerful for their NAIA opponents from Austin to keep up with for most of the match. During the first two sets, Prairie View A&M enjoyed five runs of at least six consecutive points.
Â
Freshman
MoKeysha Shanklin (Georgetown, Texas / East View HS) and junior
Haley Dibbern (Bay City, Texas / San Jacinto College) knocked down 11 kills apiece to lead the Lady Panthers. The totals were season bests for both players, who are both in their first year of four-year college volleyball.
Â
Shanklin also had only two errors as she finished the match with a .429 hitting percentage. Freshman teammate
Jasmine Lewis (Rowlett, Texas / Rowlett HS) knocked down seven kills against only one error for a .455 hitting percentage.
Â
Junior setter
Ana Kiso (Belgrade, Serbia / Panola College) handed out 32 assists in the match, her highest total for a three-set contest this season for the Lady Panthers. Senior libero
LaKeisha Allen (McAllen, Texas / Rowe HS) led the defensive effort with 12 digs.
Â
As a team, the Lady Panthers hit a season-best .326 for the match while limiting Huston-Tillotson to a .096 hitting percentage. Aside from HT's Kayla Garrett, who knocked down six kills and hit .500 for the match, no Lady Ram hit better than .200 or had more than four kills against Prairie View A&M.
Â
The Rams (3-11) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but a 6-0 run by Prairie View A&M gave the Panthers a 7-4 lead. After those first five points, the Panthers ended up with a 14-4 run that gave them a 16-8 lead.
Â
HT would get no closer than six points from their hosts in the first set as the Panthers ended the match with a 9-2 run. Dibbern knocked down four of her 11 kills during that stretch.
Â
The Lady Panthers were briefly hindered by a slow start in the second match, falling behind by a score of 4-3. But what followed was PVAMU's finest stretch of the match as the Lady Panthers scored the next 10 and 17 of the next 19 points.
Â
The Rams recovered and played stronger in the third set, and were tied with their hosts as late as 13-13, but a 6-0 PVAMU run gave the visitors an uphill battle that they could not overcome.
Lenicia Tyson (Baltimore, Md. / Humble [Texas] HS) knocked down two of her six kills during that stretch.
Â
Mariah Cox (Denver, Colo. / New Mexico Military Institute) also registered six kills for the Lady Panthers.
Paige Chuidian (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch) added four digs to the PVAMU defensive effort.
Â
The Lady Panthers will now have six days to prepare for their next match, a Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division matchup at Southern on Tuesday. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
