PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – After 87 minutes of competitive, hard-nosed, defensive soccer, the Howard Bison took advantage of a defensive misplay and went on to claim a 1-0 win Friday at Prairie View A&M.
Noelle McCullom got in front of an errant clearing pass from the Prairie View A&M defense and sent a through pass on to Whitney White, who finished with solid strike from nine yards out to give the Bison the match-winner in the 88th minute.
Howard (7-8-1) reclaimed first place atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference table with the win, improving its league record to 6-1.
The Lady Panthers (6-7-1) saw their six-match unbeaten snapped as they fell into second place with a 5-1-1 league record.
White's match-winning goal was the only decent scoring chance the Bison found in the second half. Meanwhile, Prairie View A&M played far more aggressive and kept the ball on Howard's side of the field after halftime.
With approximately a quarter-hour remaining in the contest, the Lady Panthers came up just short when
Deborah Arguelles beat a defender and sent a crossing pass across the goal box, but it could not find a receiver.
In the 87th minute,
Khalisha Bond got a great look at the goal from 20 yards out. Her strike was on target into the upper part of the net, but goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson batted over the crossbar.
Dickinson made six saves en route to the victory. Prairie View A&M senior goalkeeper
Bianca Garza made four saves in the match.
The Lady Panthers return to action next Friday when they a host a formidable Southern University squad at the Prairie View A&M fields. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Notes: Howard, a member institution of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in women's soccer only. It is one of three MEAC programs that fields women's soccer; Delaware State and South Carolina State compete as independents.
