Blackshear Field FInale Ends On Sour Note

Alcorn State Has Offensive Explosion In WIn Over PVAMU

The final game in the history of Blackshear Field didn't go as planned as Prairie View A&M struggled to contain a red-hot Alcorn State offense in a 77-48 loss on Saturday afternoon.

It didn't take long for the Braves to set the tempo as Billy Shed caught an 85-yard pass from quarterback John Gibbs and raced to the PVAMU 7.  Three plays later, Arron Baker rushed in from three yards out for the game's first score and a 7-0 lead following the PAT.  A PVAMU fumble on the opening drive led to a 14-0 deficit as the Braves jumped ahead 14-0 after Lenorris Footman's 4-yard rush and the ensuing PAT.

Prairie View A&M settled down after the early deficit and began to click offensively as the running game got going and led to a 33-yard touchdown rush by Johnta' Hebert on a 2nd-and-33 possession.  The Panther defense forced a punt on the next drive and the passing attack came alive as Jerry Lovelocke completed five passes, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to an acrobatic Nick Pitre in the back of the endzone.

Unfortunately, the tie didn't last long as ASU needed only four plays to move ahead by a touchdown and a Panther interception on the next drive led to another quick two-play drive by the Braves as the lead grew to 35-14 in the second quarter.  Hebert came up big after the ASU scores and hit the hole for a 60-yard touchdown to keep the Panthers within two touchdowns at 35-21.

ASU had another two-play drive once again and answered PVAMU's score with a 49-yard touchdown reception at the 7:49 mark for a 42-21 lead after the PAT.  The Panthers punted on their next drive and ASU was on the verge of adding three-points to the ledger until a Nick Brewer block led to a 63-yard touchdown return by Joshua Holley and a 42-28 deficit by the Panthers.  Alcorn State converted a third and fourth down conversion on the following drive to remain alive and closed out the half ahead 49-29 after Gibbs' pass to Jaborian McKenzie four seconds left.

Prairie View A&M opened the second half with a 12-play, 76-yard scoring drive that was capped off by Lovelocke's 20-yard pass to Keith Hartaway for a 49-35 deficit after the PAT.  However, ASU answered with Baker touchdown run and 35-yard pass from Gibbs to McKenzie to jump ahead 63-35 at the 3:58 mark.  A Lovelocke to Rayshaun Givens' 74-yard pass set-up a 5-yard run by Lovelocke for a 63-41 deficit but once again, ASU couldn't be stopped as McKenzie recorded a 31-yard run and the team's 70-th point after the PAT.

Hebert scored from 5 yards out late in the fourth quarter but ASU tacked on another score with 4:30 left for the game's final score.

The Panthers tallied 545 offensive yards while surrendering 699 yards and an uncharacteristic 154 yards in penalties.  Hebert finished with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries while Gabe Dunlap caught eight passes for 105 yards.  Damond Jackson and Jerome Howard tied for the team lead in tackles with 13 apiece with Jackson accounting for 1.5 tackles for loss.

Prairie View A&M is off next weekend and plays its final two games of the season on the road beginning at Pine Bluff, Ark. at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
