Paige's OT goal lifts Prairie View A&M to victory over Jackson State

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Dominique Paige couldn't have planned a better time to score her first career goal in a Prairie View A&M uniform.

The senior from Orlando, Fla. (Polk State College) scored less than two minutes into the second overtime session Sunday to give the Lady Panthers a 3-2, golden-goal victory and close out Prairie View A&M's 2014 home schedule.

Prairie View (8-7-1) clinched the second seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference postseason tournament with the win. The Lady Panthers' improved to 7-1-1 in SWAC play.

Reina Mata (Houston, Texas/Aldine HS) and Shelby Moore (Sparks, Nev./Feather River College) also scored goals for the Lady Panthers. Moore put the Lady Panthers ahead 1-0 when she put home a rebound off a shot from Celene Batrez in the eighth minute.

After the teams went into the interval tied at one, Mata regained the lead for the Panthers in the 72nd minute when she placed a brilliant shot in the high corner of the goal on a free kick from roughly 40 yards out. Jackson State goalie Kylie Christian made a great effort, but had no chance of stopping Mata's perfect strike.

Mata's goal looked as if it was going to be the match-winner, but Jackson State came through with an equalizer in the 87th minute when Elexis Rice headed a free kick to her teammate Rayana Speight, who placed a hard shot into the lower-left hand corner of the goal.

Bianca Garza (Nederland, Texas/Nederland HS) made five saves en route to the victory. She denied the Tigers several good scoring opportunities during the match.

The Lady Panthers conclude the regular season Friday when they travel to Houston to face Texas Southern. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The SWAC's postseason tournament will be Nov. 6 – 9 at the John Hunt Soccer Complex in Huntsville, Ala.
