NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Prairie View A&M's
Jeanette Jackson scored 27 points, but it was not enough as the Lady Panthers fell to Stephen F. Austin 83-73 Tuesday.
Taylor Ross scored 24 points, and Porsha Roberts and Tierany Henderson each posted double-doubles to lead Stephen F. Austin. The win evened the Ladyjacks' record to 1-1.
Prairie View A&M dropped to 0-2 for the season.
The Lady Panthers shot 53.6 (15 of 28) in the first half, but couldn't sustain that rate after halftime; Prairie View A&M was 11-of-31 (36 percent) from the field in the second half.
Prairie View A&M fell behind early in the first half, but kept chipping away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 38 with two minutes to play in the first half. The Ladyjacks reclaimed the advantage they enjoyed for most of the first half when they finished the period with a 10-1 run over the last 1:55.
The Lady Panthers struck first in the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 points after halftime to pull to within two points.
Shaneece Stephens knocked down a 15-foot jumper to cut the SFA lead to 49-47 at the 18:07 mark of the second half.
Stephens (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Brevard CC) scored nine points, matching her PVAMU career high which set last year against Stephen F. Austin.
But just as quickly as the Lady Panthers closed the gap, the Ladyjacks answered back with an 8-0 run to stretch their lead back to double-digits at 57-47. Paulletta Powell's layup capped the run at the 15:52 mark.
To the delight of the SFA fans, that would be a recurring theme in the second half: The Lady Panthers would claw their way back to within a two-possession score, only to see the Ladyjacks pull away again. The Lady Panthers used an 8-0 run between the 8:19 and 6:51 marks to cut the SFA lead to 68-63, only to see the Jacks push their lead to double-digits again.
The Ladyjacks would lead by as many as 14 points late in the second half.
Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) added six rebounds and six assists to her 27 points. All of those totals are season highs.
Ebonee Tate (Fort Worth, Texas / Arkansas Baptist College) scored 10 points off the Prairie View A&M bench.
The Lady Panthers return to action Monday when they make the short drive to College Station to face Texas A&M. The 3-0 Aggies are ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Division I Women's Basketball poll, and No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches poll released Wednesday.
Tipoff between the Lady Panthers and Aggies is scheduled for 7 p.m.
