Read the Associated Press' story on ESPN.comCOLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies pulled away from Prairie View A&M with a 10-0 run over the last five minutes of the first half Monday and claimed a 59-43 win over the Lady Panthers.
Â
The Lady Panthers (0-3) gave the Associated Press' No. 7-ranked team in the country (No. 6, USA Today Coaches') all they could handle for most of the half, and even started the game by taking an 8-2 lead over the Aggies. But Texas A&M flexed its muscles over 10-minute span on either side of halftime and rode that advantage to the win.
Â
Jeanette Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) scored a game-high 24 points and handed out four assists to lead Prairie View A&M. Courtney Walker scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Texas A&M (5-0).
Â
After missing Prairie View A&M's previous game at Stephen F. Austin,
Shamiya Brooks (West Point, Ga. / Troupe HS) returned to the Lady Panthers' lineup and pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds and blocked five shots, which tied a career-best. She also scored four points Monday.
Â
One of Jackson's four assists came on a long pass to Brooks, who calmly went in for a layup to cut Texas A&M's lead to 45-28 with 9:24 remaining in the game. It was significant because it topped Prairie View A&M's score in the team's previous meeting; the Aggies defeated the Lady Panthers 76-27 on Nov. 13, 2013.
Â
The Panthers refused to go away quietly in the first half as Texas A&M could muster little more than a four-point lead for most of the game's first 15 minutes. PVAMU tied the game at 19 when Brooks got a rebound and a put-back layup with 5:08 left in the first half.
Â
Prairie View A&M took advantage of the Aggies' poor free-throw shooting in the first half; Texas A&M missed their first seven free throws and were 2-of-9 from the line for the first 20 minutes.
Â
But from there, Texas A&M pulled away from its guests with a 20-0 run that lasted the duration of the first half and the first three minutes and 36 seconds of the half. The Lady Panthers would not get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Â
The Lady Panthers were hindered by shooting 23 percent (14 of 62) from the floor during the game. They were 6-of-36 (17 percent) from the floor during the second half.
Â
The Panthers will return to action this weekend when they travel to Hawaii for three games at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout. Prairie View A&M will open the event with the host Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine on Friday, and then face ranked opponents North Carolina and Stanford on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
