HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers erased a nine-point deficit midway through the second half, but were unable to overtake their hosts as Hawai'i took a 72-58 win Friday at the second game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Connie Morris scored 15 points to lead four Rainbow Wahine players scoring in double-figures as Hawai'i improved its record to 4-1.
The Lady Panthers fell to 0-4 with the defeat.
Shamiya Brooks scored a season-high 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers, who made their first trip to Hawaii in six seasons.
Jeanette Jackson added 12 points for the Panthers.
The Panthers kept pace with their hosts in the first half, but fell behind by double-digits early in the second half. A 7-0 Prairie View A&M run between the 10:22 and 8:40 marks of the second half cut the Rainbow Wahine's lead to 56-54, but Hawai'i would allow the Panthers to get no closer the rest of the game.
The Rainbow Wahine helped themselves by shooting better than 50 percent from the field in both halfs. For the game, Hawai'i players shot 57 percent (29 of 51) from the floor.
The Lady Panthers return to action Saturday when they face North Carolina, ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, and No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches poll. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (2 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time).
