HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Stanford Cardinal scored 23 unanswered points to set the tone Sunday and went on to claim an 88-45 win over the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers.
At the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout, Erica McCall scored 13 points to lead four Stanford players scoring in double figures as the Cardinal, ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (No. 4 – USA Today Coaches) improved their record to 5-2.
Jeanette Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) scored 12 points to lead the Lady Panthers (0-6).
The Cardinal broke the game wide open with a 23-0 run between the 17:52 and 9:57 marks of the first half and turned a 6-4 deficit into a 27-6 lead. Stanford took a 52-18 lead into halftime.
Prairie View A&M was held to 13 percent shooting (4 of 30) from the floor during the first half while the Cardinal shot 58 percent (18 of 31) during the same span.
For the game, Stanford shot a 55 percent (30 of 55) from the floor.
The game against Stanford was the second consecutive contest against a ranked opponent for the Lady Panthers and the third Prairie View A&M's last four.
The Lady Panthers will play their first home game of the 2014-15 season Wednesday when they welcome the Schreiner Mountaineers to Prairie View. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and is part of a basketball doubleheader; the PVAMU men will also face Schreiner at 7:30 p.m. at William Nicks Arena.
Wednesday's games is part of Prairie View A&M's Church Night. As part of the promotion, fans will be able to purchase a $4 hot dog and drink combo.
