HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 2014 Prairie View A&M women's soccer team is going where no previous Lady Panthers team has gone before: The Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship.
 
The Lady Panthers punched their ticket to the SWAC Championship match Friday by defeating Alabama State 2-0 in the second tournament semifinal.
 
The Lady Panthers face Howard in the SWAC championship match Sunday at noon. Both teams are competing for their first conference championship.
 
Senior Melissa Kalbfleisch (Reno, Nev. / Feather River College) put the Lady Panthers ahead for good when she opened the scoring three minutes from the interval when she beat Hornets goalie Kylee Hathaway. It was Kalbfleisch's (pictured above – #16) second goal of the season.
 
Dominique Paige (Orlando, Fla. / Polk State College) gave the Lady Panthers the cushion they needed to start celebrating early with a strike in the 85th minute. Paige recovered her own rebound after her first shot hit the side post.
 
The Lady Panthers were in control for the duration of the match, as they limited the Hornets to only three shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Bianca Garza (Nederland, Texas / Nederland HS) was up to the task of stopping every shot en route to her seventh shutout of the season.
 
The win was the Lady Panthers' program-best 11th victory. With the triumph, Prairie View A&M improved to 11-7-1 for the season.
