BOX SCORE HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A big first half run by Sam Houston State made all the difference as Prairie View A&M dropped a 61-44 road decision on Saturday evening.
A jumper by PVAMU freshman
Zachary Hamilton would mark PVAMU's lone lead of the night as SHSU tied it on the ensuing possession before leading for good after a Jabari Peters' dunk at the 17:42 mark. SHSU would extend its lead to as much as eight points four minutes later but a balanced attack which saw four Panthers score buckets closed the gap to 14-12 with 10:58 left in the half. However, the game slipped away as
SHSU outscored the Panthers 20-5 over the final 10 minutes en route to a 34-17 SHSU lead.
Prairie View's deficit was too great to overcome in the second half as SHSU maintained a double-digit lead the entire half. Despite the gap, PVAMU was on par with the Bearkats shooting-wise from the field but SHSU made seven three-pointers compared to PVAMU's two. SHSU also got to the foul line a total of 21 attempts compated to only 10 from PVAMU.
Jayrnn Johnson and
Karim York both scored 10 each with
Tre Hagood grabbing a team-high six rebounds along with six assists and three steals.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday as they'll face North Texas in Denton, Texas at 7 p.m.
