The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team opens its 2014-15 home schedule Wednesday with a visit from Schreiner University. The Lady Panthers are looking for their first win of the season and their first since winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in March. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Panthers (0-6) have faced tough competition over their first six games, including three games against teams ranked No. 11 or higher in the Associated Press' Division I Top 25 poll. Prairie View A&M fought hard and gave a respectable showing in a 59-41 loss at No. 7 Texas A&M last week; the result was a marked improvement over last season's 76-27 loss in College Station.
After being named to preseason All-SWAC First Team, Prairie View A&M senior guard
Jeanette Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) has led the way for the Lady Panthers, averaging a team-high 18.3 points per game. She has also been quick to share the basketball, handing out 21 assists – more than half of the team's total. Jackson's 18.6 points per game ranks third in the SWAC, and earlier this week she was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Panthers' inside game has been led by junior
Shamiya Brooks (West Point, Ga. / Troupe HS). The 6-foot-4 post ranks second on the PVAMU squad with 7.4 points per game, and leads the SWAC in rebounding by pulling in 9.2 caroms per contest. At Texas A&M, Brooks set a career high by pulling down 14 rebounds, and tied another career high with five blocked shots.
The Lady Panthers also welcome five transfers to their squad. Four of them come from the junior college ranks and one – Bryan, Texas product
Lamaria Cole – from Kansas University. Cole has averaged 3.7 points per game, while
Chelsey Rosier (Tallahassee, Fla. / Gulf Coast State College) is averaging 3.8 points per contest. The Lady Panthers will also welcome Winthrop transfer
Christina Solmon (Waltham Park, Jamaica) to the roster at the conclusion of the fall semester.
The Schreiner women's basketball team enters its game at Prairie View A&M with a record of 1-6. The Mountaineers are coming off competitive losses against Louisiana College and Howard Payne at the Southwestern University Thanksgiving Classic. The Mountaineers are experiencing an upward trajectory under second-year head coach Temaine Wright. Last season, Schreiner set an NCAA-era record for wins in a season and won their first postseason contest since leaving the NAIA in the late 1990s.
Kelsie Jackson leads Schreiner in scoring with 12 points per game. The Mountaineers are 0-6 away from the Schreiner University campus in Kerrville, Texas..
