BOX SCORE HONOLULU – A 10-0 second half run broke open a tight game as Hawai'I pulled away for a 76-68 win over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A balanced scoring attack paved the way for an early 12-6 Panther lead but a pair of Hawai'i steals and three-pointers kickstarted a 10-0 surge which swung the momentum meter back to the Rainbow Warriors. Hawai'i would lead by as much as six points on several occasions throughout the first half but the Panthers battled back as Jayrn Johnson's three-pointer and Tre Hagood's free throw tied the game twice over the final 1:42. With four ticks left on the clock, Hawai'i's Stefan Jovanovic nailed a jumper as Hawai'i claimed a 38-36 halftime advantage.
Jacoby Green's trey gave the Panthers an early 39-38 lead in the second half and began a back-and-forth affair which saw four ties occur along with eight lead changes.
Tied at 58-all with 7:06 remaining, the game began to turn in Hawai'i's favor as the Panthers missed six consecutive shots while the Rainbow Warriors hit four of their next seven shots en route to a 10-0 run and a 68-58 lead with 3:28 remaining.
Prairie View A&M persevered and battled back as Montrael Scott scored seven of the team's eight points over the next two minutes to close within four at 70-66 at the 1:33 mark. However, Hawai'i countered with a layup and a basket off a turnover to move ahead by eight as they held off the Panthers from that point to claim their third win in school history over PVAMU.
Scott was the game's top scorer, posting a game-high 27 points and hitting five three-pointers to keep Prairie View A&M in the game.
Karim York added 12 off the bench while Tre Hagood grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists.
SWAC play kicks off this Saturday evening in Baton Rouge, La. as the Panthers will face Southern at 5:30 p.m.
