SAN MARCOS, Texas - In what's becoming an occurring theme this season, Prairie View A&M fell victim to another second half run as Texas State pulled away for an 81-65 win on Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
The Panthers were neck-and-neck with their Sun Belt foes as they claimed an early 12-8 lead after
Tre Hagood's layup. However, the Bobcars responded with a 13-4 surge to move ahead 21-18 but a trey by PVAMU senior
John Brisco tied the game at 21-all. PVAMU forced a turnover immediately after the trey but failed to capitalize as Texas State scored four straight to move ahead 25-21 at the 7:17 mark.
A pair of free throws by Hagood with 6:46 remaining in the half closed the Panthers to 25-23 but a Texas State basket followed by a Panther turnover led to a trey by Texas State for a 28-23 PVAMU deficit. After the basket, the game's flow stalled as neither team would score during a two-minute span which saw multiple turnovers and missed shots occur.
Brisco ended the drought with a jumper and
Karim York followed with a layup to draw the Panthers within 30-27 at the 2:59 mark. The Bobcats' Ethan Montalvo anwered with a layup to up the margin to 32-27 and another missed PVAMU basket led to a Texas State bucket and a 34-27 Bobcat lead with 1:28 left. A basket in the paint by
Nolan Wilson brought the Panthers to within 34-29 as each team traded baskets from that point en route to a 36-31 Bobcat lead after Hagood's basket. Texas State's Emani Gant scored the final points of the half as his basket closed out the scoring at 38-31.
A 6-2 run by Texas State to open the half saw them lead by double digits (44-33) slightly past the 18-minute mark. PVAMU's
Montrael Scott answered with a layup on the ensuing possession to cut the deficit to single digits but Texas State regained its double digit margin a minute later on a pair of free throws by Gant. Hagood's three-point play brought the Panthers to within 46-38 with 16:27 left but a 7-2 run by the Bobcats saw the Panthers fall behind 53-40 almost four minutes later. Consecutive baskets by Hagood and Brisco drew the Panthers to within 53-45 but Texas State struck paydirt once again with a 9-0 run to lead 62-45 with 9:45 left on the clock.
The Panthers refused to go away without a fight as they outscored the Bobcats 12-4 over the next five minutes to close the gap to 65-57 following York's trey. However, Texas State answered with a 10-0 run to put the game away as the Panthers never recovered from the late surge.
Brisco led the way with 17 points while Hagood finished with 15 points, eight assists and two six rebounds.
The Panthers return to action next Sunday as they'll face Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas at 1 p.m.
