WBB GAME NOTES
One week after seeing its winning streak snapped in an emotional fashion, Prairie View A&M returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday looking to start a new streak with a match-up versus Jackson State as the team will don commmorative pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Lady Panthers have little time dwell on their past loss as today's game is very important due to the fact that Jackson State is a half-game ahead of them in the SWAC standings. A win on Saturday would create a tie for third place in the SWAC with point differential the factor in determining the winner of the season series if both teams remain tied at the end of the regular season. With the second half of SWAC play underway, every point counts as seeding is at stake for the upcoming SWAC Tournament in March at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Junior guard Jeanette Jackson continues her solid play with averages of 18.4 points and four assists per game. She ranks fourth amongst SWAC leaders in scoring while ranking third in free throw percentage (80), fourth in steals (2.3) and third in assists. Sophomore post Shamiya Brooks provides the team an inside presence as she's coming off her fourth career double-double last week along with averages of 6.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Senior guard LaReahn Washington is providing quality senior leadership with 7.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Redshirt sophomore shooting guard Gabrielle Scott has also come on strong with 7.5 points and leads the team with a 32 percent average from the three-point line.
Led by second-year head coach Surina Dixon, Jackson State has won three of its past four but is coming off a 70-55 loss to Southern on Monday. The Lady Tigers are led by junior forward Ayanna Hardy-Fuller's 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while guard Alisa Ross follows with 10.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Today's game versus Jackson State will have several ties for PVAMU interim head coach Dawn Brown and Director of Player Development Larry McNeil as Brown is a JSU graduate and former basketball player while McNeil served as the team's interim head coach in 2011.
Prairie View A&M will return to action Monday evening with a match-up versus Grambling State at 5:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
