Panthers Grind It Out For 53-50 Win Over Jackson State

It wasn't the prettiest of games as the Prairie View A&M Panthers overcame a sluggish offensive performance combined with another gritty defensive stand in the final seconds to claim an important 53-50 home win over Jackson State on Saturday evening in the William Nicks Building.

The Panthers never led in the first half as they got off to a sluggish start at the free throw line with six consecutive misfires.  Offensively, the Panthers struggled from the field as they only hit 6-of-21 attempts while being outrebounded 24-13 by JSU. Despite the team's offensive struggles, the Panthers were in the contest as they were tied at 14-all with 7:32 remaining.  However, the Panthers suffered a case of the turnover bug as they committed three turnovers over the next four minutes which led to a 10-1 JSU run and a 22-15 deficit.  Prairie View A&M closed to within five on two occasions from that point but couldn't get over the hump as JSU claimed a 28-21 halftime advantage.

It took nearly three minutes for either team to score in the second half as Montrael Scott and Tre Hagood ended the drought as the duo combined for three points to narrow the gap to 28-24 with 17:21 remaining.  JSU's Julysses Nobles and Derrell Taylor upped his team's lead back to six with two free throws but the Panthers found ways to persevere as junior guard John Brisco keyed a 9-0 run for PVAMU's first lead of the game at 33-31 with 12:36 remaining.

The game resembled a closed fist from that point as there were four ties and four lead changes over the final 12:36.  Tied at 41-all with 8:10 remaining, JSU's Derell Taylor moved JSU ahead 43-41 but Brisco answered Taylor's basket with a three-pointer for a 44-43 PVAMU advantage at the 7:51 mark.  After a JSU missed three-pointer, senior forward Demondre Chapman hit a pair of free throws for a 46-43 margin.  The Panthers played inspired defense from that point and held JSU scoreless from the field and the free throw line as the Tigers missed three straight free throws before Brandon West's free throw with 5:32 left for a 46-44 PVAMU lead.

A layuyp by Chapman upped PVAMU's margin to 48-44 with 5:18 remaining and the lead held until 1:18 left as Nobles hit an uncontested jumper for a 49-48 Tiger lead.  On the ensuing possession, Brisco scored the game's biggest basket as he drained a trey from the right side.  JSU missed a basket on its next trip down the court but Hershey Robinson stepped out of bounds after picking up the rebound with 25 seconds left.

Jackson State's Jeffrey Stubbs was fouled by Brisco with 16 seconds left and hit 1-of-2 free throws before Scott soared high above the trees to grab an important rebound on the missed attempt as he was fouled with 14 seconds left.  Scott hit 1-of-2 free throws for a two-point advantage but PVAMU was not out of the water as Nobles misfired on a quick trey attempt with four seconds left.  Scott was fouled once again and hit only 1-of-2 for a 53-50 lead as Nobles potential game-tying three-pointer fell short at the buzzer.

Brisco led the Panthers with 20 points while Scott finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

PVAMU returns to action on Monday evening as they'll host Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
