Jackson, Washington, Scott Lead Lady Panthers To Big Win Over Jackson State

BOX SCORE
Jeanette Jackson and LaReahn Washington combined to score 52 points as Prairie View A&M held off a second-half charge by Jackson State for a 92-76 win inside the William Nicks Building on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Panthers wasted no time in setting the tone with a 13-2 lead in the first five minutes.  Prairie View A&M terrorized JSU defensively with five turnovers during that span coupled with solid offensive production as LaReahn Washington and Jeanette Jackson combined for 12 points.

In a matter of seconds, JSU closed to within 13-7 as Kameron Jones nailed a jumper followed by an Ayanna Lynn three-point play after a turnover.  However, PVAMU quickly responded as Asha Hampton-Finch hit a jumper followed by Shamiya Brooks' putback for a 17-7 advantage.  Once again, JSU narrowed its gap to 22-16 several minutes later but the Lady Panthers pushed it back to double figures after Jackson's layup.

Prairie View A&M maintained a comfortable lead for most of the first half but JSU inched back and drew to within 41-32 with 3:50 left on Kameron Jones' jumper.  From that point, the Lady Panthers turned on the jets and closed out the half on a 15-4 run as guard Taylor Overshown nailed a buzzer-beating trey with no time remaining for a 20-point (56-36) halftime advantage.

After an impressive first half, the wheels began to fall off PVAMU's cart on both ends of the court.  Jackson State scored the first six points of the second half to draw within 12 while it took PVAMU six minutes to score as LaReahn Washington scored on a layup for the 14-point margin.  Despite Washington's basket, JSU remained on the offensive as PVAMU's once-safe lead whittled down to seven (70-63) following a 25-7 second half run.

Two free throws by Washington upped PVAMU's lead to 72-63 with 8:52 left but JSU once again closed to within seven on Alisa Ross' layup at the 7:22 mark.  With the momentum clearly in Jackson State's favor, the Lady Panthers turned to their floor leader in Jeanette Jackson for guidance and came up big as the Las Vegas, Nev. native scored five straight points over the next 50 seconds for a 76-65 advantage.  After her baskets, the Lady Panthers came up big defensively with a block by Shamiya Brooks coupled with a JSU turnover which led to a three-point from Gabrielle Scott for a 79-65 lead.

Scott's basket was icing on the cake as PVAMU regained the lead and never looked back en route to splitting the season series with JSU and earning the tiebreaker by virtue of beating JSU by more than one point.

Jackson led PVAMU with 28 points while Washington followed with 24 points, four assists and two steals. Gabrielle Scott added 16 points along with 11 rebounds from Brooks.

PVAMU returns to action on Monday evening as they'll host Grambling State at 5:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
