BOX SCORE
A sluggish start came back to haunt Prairie View A&M as its last minute rally came up short in an 83-81 loss to Grambling State on Monday night in the Baby Dome.
Grambling State found success with its outside shot early on as they claimed an 8-0 lead to open the contest. The Panthers finally woke up from that point and grinded their way to a 19-17 deficit at the 8:11 mark but GSU held on to the lead with a closed fist the remainder of the half. PVAMU senior forward Demondre Chapman drew the Panthers to within 31-28 with 12 seconds left but a defensive lapse left GSU's Windale Glinton open in the paint for a buzzer-beating layup and a 33-28 Tiger lead entering halftime.
Two free throws by PVAMU's Reggis Onwukamuche narrowed the gap to 34-33 with 19:01 left in the second half. However, the Panthers struggled to pick up a key defensive stop as GSU pushed its lead to 54-44 led by A'Torri Shine and Terry Rose's outside shooting. Grambling State maintained a safe lead the rest of the way as it grew to as much as 11 with 2:37 remaining but the Panthers clawed their way back down 77-67 with 1:45 left.
Senior guard Louis Munks hit a layup for a 77-69 deficit and a John Brisco steal led to a Montrael Scott three-pointer and a five-point (77-72) gap with 1:21 left. GSU's Tyron Bain upped its gap to 79-72 on the next possession with two free throws and the teams traded free throws for a 80-73 Tiger lead at the 52 second mark. Four seconds later, Brisco hit a huge three-pointer to climb within 80-76 but missed an opportunity to close within one as his three-pointer fell short after a Tiger turnover.
Grambling State's Chandler Thomas broke free from the press on the next series and was fouled after scoring a layup with 27 seconds left. Thomas missed an opportunity for the three-point play and it came back to haunt him as Brisco nailed a three-pointer for a three-point (82-79) deficit with 18 seconds left. Grambling State was whistled for a technical foul on its next possession and the Panthers took advantage of the gift as Brisco nailed both free throws to bring PVAMU within 82-81with 17 seconds left.
As a result of the technical foul, the ball remained in PVAMU's possession as they had a chance to claim its first lead of the night. However, the defense tightened and PVAMU's Tre Hagood was whistled for a turnover with four seconds left. Thomas was fouled immediately to stop the clock and hit 1-of-2 baskets but the Panthers failed to get a clean look at the basket on its final possession as Brisco's three-pointer fell short.
Brisco and Scott led the Panthers with 22 and 21 points, respectively while Chapman scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench. Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers led by 21 from Shine.
Prairie View A&M will return to action Saturday night with a match-up at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Ark. at 7:30 p.m.
