DENTON, Texas – Prairie View A&M finally hit the softball diamond on Friday as they dropped a pair of contests in their 2014 season debut at a tournament hosted by the University of North Texas.
SFA tacked on seven runs in the middle innings to claim a 9-4 win in Prairie View A&M's season opener.
A two-out error in the first which allowed SFA's Elizabeth Arana to reach third paved the way for SFA's first run of the morning as Arana scored on Brittany Lewis' RBI single. SFA crossed home another run in the second with two outs but PVAMU cut its deficit to 2-1 in the bottom frame as Alisa Navarro homered to left field.
The two-out bug haunted PVAMU once again in the third as a wild pitch followed by a two-run homer led to a 5-1 SFA advantage. SFA scored again in the fourth to lead 6-1 but PVAMU narrowed the gap to 6-3 in the fourth as a wild pitch allowed Brenicia Woods to score followed by Navarro's RBI single which brought home Peyton Simms, who reached base via a double.
A leadoff triple and a walk led to a three-run homer in the fifth and a 9-3 PVAMU deficit. In the bottom of the fifth, PVAMU's Laura Martinez drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a SFA error before scoring on Leanna Flores' RBI single up the middle for the game's final run.
Monica Cartwight dropped to 0-1 on the mound in her PVAMU debut which lasted three innings. Navarro finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a walk and run scored while Woods went 2-for-4 while crossing home once.
In game two, the Lady Panthers ran into a buzz saw as the University of North Texas scored five runs in the first and never looked back in an 18-0 victory.
Martinez drew a leadoff walk to open the contest and moved into scoring position after stealing two bases but stalled at third as PVAMU could not capitalize offensively. With one out in the bottom of the first, UNT hit a two-run homer followed by a three-RBI double three batters later for a 5-0 lead. PVAMU responded in the second by loading the bases with no outs but once again, they failed to make anyway headway as a double play and ground out ended the inning.
UNT broke the game open with a nine-run third and a four-run fourth to trigger the run rule as PVAMU would manage only one hit the rest of the way.
Cally Falls fell to 0-1 in the mound with Alexandra Losoya, Cartwright and Navarro recording one hit apiece.
The tourney continues on Saturday as PVAMU will face Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. and Texas State at 3 p.m.
