The 2014 SWAC schedule is winding down as the Prairie View A&M basketball teams prepare for its final homestand of the 2014 campaign with a match-up versus Alabama A&M on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the Baby Dome. Fans unable to attend will have a variety of ways to watch or listen to the games as live broadcasts are planned for KPVU 91.3 FM and Panthervision.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
?One of the hottest teams in the SWAC, the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team returns home for its final two home regular season contests inside the William Nicks Building against Alabama A&M on Saturday and Alabama State on Monday. Before the start of today's game, the Lady Panthers will honor a pair of seniors in guard
LaReahn Washington and center
Tonisha Lacey.
?The Lady Panthers are rolling along in SWAC play as they're on a four-game winning streak and have won eight of their past 10 contests. The team sits alone in third place as they're two games ahead of Jackson State and are two games behind Southern for second place. If the regular season ended today, the Lady Panthers would enter the SWAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
?Sophomore post Shamiya Brooks has grabbed five or more rebounds in every SWAC contest this season. She has recorded 25 blocks over the past nine games and has four career double-doubles.
?Prairie View A&M has won three straight over AAMU dating back to 2013 and a win on Saturday would mark its longest winning streak over them since winning four straight from 2007 to 2008.
?Junior guard Jeanette Jackson has doubled her scoring average from last season as she's scoring an average of 19.3 points per outing. She's also the reigning SWAC Player of the Week and a four-time honoree this season. Jackson has already surpassed 1,000 points in her career.
?The Lady Panthers were picked to finish second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season after capturing their third consecutive NCAA Tournament Berth and SWAC Tournament Championship in 2013.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
?The Prairie View A&M Panthers return home for their final two home contests of the 2013-14 campaign as they prepare to face Alabama A&M on Saturday and Alabama State on Monday night. With the second half of SWAC play underway, every point counts as seeding is at stake for the upcoming SWAC Tournament in March at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
?The Panthers are struggling at this point as they're on a three-game losing streak with only four regular season games left. Since defeating Jackson State on Feb. 15, the Panthers have fallen in the SWAC standings and are now tied for eighth with Jackson State. If the season ended today, the Panthers would hold the seventh seed in the tourney due to them holding the tiebreaker over Jackson State.
?Prairie View A&M has won three of four over AAMU dating back to Feb. 25, 2012. PVAMU's Byron Rimm II is 6-9 lifetime versus Alabama A&M as the Bulldogs lead the all-time series 22-10.
?If the Panthers manage to defeat AAMU on Saturday, they would need to beat them by 13 or more points in order to win the tiebreaker since AAMU won by 12 in the team's first meeting on Feb. 3.
?The 2013-14 Panther roster returns only one starter, seven letterwinners and adds seven newcomers.
?The Panthers were picked to finish fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season. The team finished fifth in the regular season standings last season and fell in the championship of the 2013 SWAC Tournament. Senior post Jules Montgomery was named 2013-14 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
