Prairie View A&M had another balanced effort with career highs from
Shamiya Brooks and
Taylor Overshown in a 98-77 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon in the Baby Dome.
Brooks was pretty much unstoppable in the first half as the sophomore from West Point, Ga. shot 8-of-9 from the field for 18 points. Alabama A&M hung close to open the contest as they led on several occasions within the first eight minutes. Two quick baskets from Brooks along with baskets from Gabrielle Scott gave PVAMU a 24-18 lead at the 9:20 mark.
AAMU drew to within four points with 7:59 left but the Lady Panthers rode the back of Brooks during a span of 1:17 as she hit six straight points to claim a 38-29 advantage. A pair of free throws from Gabrielle Scott and Shaneece Stephens gave PVAMU its largest lead of the half at 42-30. AAMU closed its gap to seven following an 8-3 surge but the Lady Panthers rebounded and went into halftime with a double digit lead at 51-41.
"Shamiya has that fight in her as she's been playing extremely hard right now," said interim head coach Dawn Brown. "She understands she's the glue that holds this program together because it takes pressure off our shooters."
Two treys by Jeanette Jackson increased the Lady Panthers' lead to 57-42 with 17:06 left in the second half. Holding a comfortable lead, the team received a timely contribution from sophomore Taylor Overshown as the Houston native had a career game with eight points over the next five minutes as the lead increased to 72-55. Senior guard LaReahn Washington also got in on the act with four additional points as the Lady Panthers claimed a 76-55 margin with 9:55 on the clock.
Alabama A&M had a late spark and cut its deficit to 12 with 4:21 left but Prairie View A&M went into overdrive from that point and came up two points short of 100 points as they outscored the Bulldogs 18-11 over the last minute for the final score.
Brooks led the way with a career-high 22 points followed by a 20-point, five-assist outing from Washington. Jackson had a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists while Alexus Parker added 13 points. Overshown had a career day with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals in 17 minutes of action.
The team closes out its 2014 home schedule on Monday night as they'll face Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
