Panthers Upset Top-Seeded Southern Behind Solid Team Effort

BOX SCORE
HOUSTON – Prairie View A&M pulled off the SWAC Tournament's biggest shocker to this point as the Panthers controlled the tempo from start to finish in a 64-46 win over top-seeded Southern at the Toyota Center in Downtown Center.

Prairie View A&M had success early on as they maintained a 15-10 lead through the first three media timeouts thanks to a combination of defense, free throws and high percentage jump shots.  The Panthers led by seven points on several occasions from that point as Tre Hagood hit a jumper (6:37) along with two free throws by Louis Munks (21-14) at the 2:45 mark.

Playing inspired defense, the Panthers kept the pressure on the Jaguars and upped its lead to 11 at 25-14 as senior Patrick Agho tipped in a missed layup.  The Jaguars, who struggled tremendously at the free throw line, picked up its first basket since 4:25 off a missed free throw attempt which turned out to be the final margin (25-16) at halftime.

The Panthers came out sizzling to open the second stanza with a 10-0 run as they led by as much as 19 following Demondre Chapman's layup off Tre Hagood's assist at the 16:38 mark.  Three minutes later, Louis Munks nailed 1of-2 free throws for a 21-point (39-18) lead but Southern, the defending SWAC Champion, went on a 6-0 run to close within 14 points but four consecutive points by Montrael Scott kept the Panthers ahead by 16.

Points were hard to come by for the Panthers after their run but a trey by Tre Hagood moved the lead to 49-26 with 6:14. Southern charged back over the next few minutes and cut PVAMU's lead to 52-42 with 2:26 remaining but a layup by Jules Montgomery on the ensuing play upped the lead back to 12 and returned the momentum back to the Panthers.  With time ticking down, Southern was forced to foul and the Panthers were money from the charity stripe as they were 8-of-8 in the final 1:33.

With the win, memories of the Panthers' seven-game losing streak quickly faded away as the win marked the first in seven tries over Southern and first over SU head coach Roman Banks.

"Tre took ownership during our loss at Southern last week and told the team it was his fault they were playing bad," said head coach Byron Rimm II.  "He has stepped up and become a team leader and it showed as I had to keep him in the game because he was making big shots and big plays."

Hagood led the Panthers with 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.  Montgomery followed with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocks while Scott and Brisco added eight points apiece.

The Panthers will have a much-needed day off on Thursday and return to action on Friday against the winner of either Alabama State or Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 8:30 p.m. in the Toyota Center.
