A rough start turned into a solid finish as the Prairie View A&M softball team split a doubleheader with Abilene Christian on Tuesday afternoon at the softball complex.
In game one, PVAMU struggled at the plate with 10 strikeouts as ACU scored all of its runs over the final three innings in a 10-0 victory.
ACU crossed home its first run in the third and overcame a bases loaded jam in the fourth as PVAMU missed a prime scoring opportunity with two strikeouts and a fielder's choice. The Lady Panthers surrendered nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings as the game was called due to the run-rule.
Monica Cartwright fell to 1-3 on the mound this season while Peyton Simms, Brenicia Woods and Tiffany Robertson had one hit apiece.
Prairie View A&M overcame a three-run deficit in the fifth inning and exploded for eight runs during the fifth and sixth frames to claim a 9-6 win in the nightcap.
ACU led 2-0 though two innings until Alisa Navarro's RBI single in the third cut PVAMU's deficit to 2-1. The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the fifth to lead 4-1 but PVAMU found its bats in the bottom frame.
In the fifth, Shontel Lopez's two-RBI double with two outs scored Jalen Morris and Woods for a 4-3 deficit and the Lady Panthers moved ahead 6-4 on Robertson's and Katelyn Den Beste's RBI singles. ACU knotted the contest at 6-all in the sixth but PVAMU fought back with a three-run bottom frame as Navrro and Lopez logged RBIs for a 9-6 margin which proved to be the final count as PVAMU recorded a scoreless seventh.
Cally Falls recorded six strikeouts to earn her first win of 2014 while Morris, Leanna Flores, Lopez and Robertson logged two hits each. Lopez led the way with three RBIs followed by two each from Navarro and Den Beste. Â
The teams will close out its series on Wednesday at noon in Prairie View, Texas.
