HOUSTON - For the second straight year, Panther fans will have a full slate of semifinal action featuring the men's and women's basketball teams as both have advanced to the semifinal round of the 2014 SWAC Basketball Tournament.  The Lady Panthers battle Southern at 6 p.m. followed by an 8:30 p.m. showdown featuring the Panthers and Alabama A&M at the Toyota Center in Downtown Houston.  KPVU 91.3 FM will broadcast both games via the airwaves and World Wide Web along with an Internet stream by the OpenMic Broadcast Network.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES
The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team continues tournament play on Friday night against top-seeded Southern at 6:00 p.m. in the semifinal round at the Toyota Center.

This is the time of year when PVAMU shines as the Lady Panthers are the reigning three-time SWAC Tournament Champion with a 10-0 postseason mark since 2011.  Since returning to tourney play in 2007, PVAMU is 18-2 in SWAC Tournament contests with its last tourney loss to Alabama State (first round in Shreveport, La.) in 2010.

Sophomore post Shamiya Brooks has grabbed five or more rebounds in 15 of the team's 18 SWAC contests this season and is coming off a nine-rebound outing versus Alabama State.  She also has recorded 52 blocks on the season for an average of 1.9 per game. She has recorded 36 blocks over the past 14 games and has four career double-doubles.

The Lady Panthers are very familiar with Southern as both teams met on March 6 in Baton Rouge, La.   Southern swept the season series as both trams are meeting in the postseason for the first time since a 48-44 PVAMU win in the 2010 championship game in Garland, Texas.

Junior guard Jeanette Jackson has doubled her scoring average from last season as she's scoring an average of 19.3 points per outing.  She's a four-time SWAC Player of the Week honoree this season, an All-SWAC First Teamer and has already surpassed 1,000 points in her career.  She needs 36 points for the all-time PVAMU single season scoring title.

SU leads the all-time series 53-20 and is 5-4 against PVAMU since 2011.  Even though SU won the SWAC Regular Season Title and is participating in the SWAC Tournament, they are deemed ineligible by the NCAA for NCAA Tournament play.

The Lady Panthers were picked to finish second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season after capturing their third consecutive NCAA Tournament Berth and SWAC Tournament Championship in 2013.

MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES
The Prairie View A&M Panthers are in the semifinal round of the 2014 SWAC Tournament for the second straight year as they'll play Alabama A&M at 8:30 p.m. on Friday night in the Toyota Center.

Prairie View A&M has won three of five over AAMU dating back to Feb. 25, 2012 but AAMU has won the past two match-ups.  PVAMU's Byron Rimm II, who attended AAMU briefly as an undergrad, is 6-10 lifetime versus Alabama A&M as the Bulldogs lead the all-time series 23-10.

AAMU started off fast and rolled past UAPB 69-50 in its tournament opener on Thursday.

The Panthers snapped a seven-game regular season slide with a postseason win on Tuesday night and have won two straight for the first time since Feb. 8 and Feb. 15 after knocking off top-seeded Southern on Wednesday,

The Panthers last saw AAMU on March 1 as they fell 72-65 in Prairie View.  This marks the first SWAC Tournament meeting between both teams since 2002 as AAMU claimed a 114-82 first round win in Huntsville, Ala.

AAMU is on a roll as they've won four-of-five  since March 1.

PVAMU is on the verge of making history as the Panthers have never made back-to-back semifinal round appearances.

The 2013-14 Panther roster returns only one starter, seven letterwinners and adds seven newcomers.

The Panthers were picked to finish fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season.  The team finished eighth in the regular season standings this season and fell in the championship of the 2013 SWAC Tournament.
