LONGVIEW, Texas – The PVAMU Lady Panther softball team had a roller coaster weekend as they opened SWAC play with a 2-3 mark at the SWAC Round-up in Longview, Texas.
PVAMU 10, Alabama A&M 7
The Lady Panthers opened conference play with a back-and-forth 10-7 victory over Alabama A&M on Friday.
AAMU led 1-0 after one before an explosive second frame by PVAMU as Shontel Lopez hit a two-run homer along with Jazmin Hicks' home run for a 3-1 lead. AAMU closed to within 3-2 in the third but PVAMU made the score 6-2 in the bottom frame as Leanna Flores and Hicks recorded RBIs. Alisa Navarro drove in two runs for an 8-2 advantage after four innings but AAMU scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to trail 8-7. Navarro's two RBIs in the sixth gave PVAMU a 10-7 lead as Cally Falls picked up the save.
Monica Cartwright improved to 2-3 on the season while Navarro finished 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Jalen Morris and Hicks also added two hits apiece with Hicks driving in three RBIs.
Jackson State 15, PVAMU 0
Nothing went right for PVAMU as Jackson State opened with a 9-0 lead after two innings of play en route to a 15-0 loss.
JSU jumped ahead 9-0 after two innings while PVAMU struggled with only three hits the entire game. JSU added five more runs in the fifth for the final margin.
Morris, Flores and Hicks had hits for PVAMU while Brittanie Gardner took the loss.
Alabama State 10, PVAMU 8
A promising game turned sour for PVAMU as Alabama State overcame a five-run deficit in the third while adding five runs over the final two innings for a 10-8 decision.
PVAMU jumped ahead 4-0 as Lopez singled home two runs followed by Hicks' RBI triple. Hicks capped the scoring in the first as she scored on an illegal pitch. The lead grew to 5-0 in the second as Brenicia Woods hit an RBI single to score Jalen Morris but the lead quickly disappeared as ASU tacked on five runs in the third to knot the game at 5-all.
ASU moved ahead 10-5 entering the seventh and PVAMU mounted a rally as Monica Cartwright recorded an RBI. Peyton Simms hit a one-out sacrifice fly followed by Morris' two-out RBI. However, the rally fell short with two runners left via a game-ending strikeout.
Samantha Arciba took the loss in relief while Morris led the way with three hits.
Alcorn State 10, PVAMU 9
PVAMU had another close call go the other way as Alcorn State overcame a six-run deficit and held off another late PVAMU rally for a 10-9 win.
PVAMU led 6-0 after one as Woods and Hicks combined for three RBIs along with Jessica Long's three-run homer. Alcorn State used a grand slam to fuel a six-run second and pulled away with four runs over the next three innings.
The Lady Panthers tried to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as they opened with bases loaded and no outs. Three runs crossed home but it was too little too late as ASU held off the late rally.
Falls was credited with the loss on the mound while Flores and Woods had two hits each with Long leading the way with three RBIs.
PVAMU 14, Mississippi Valley State 12
In a rematch of last year's SWAC Tourney Semifinal, PVAMU was on the right end of the ledger this time as they rallied to claimed a 14-12 win over Mississippi Valley.
Samantha Arciba drove in the game's first run in the first followed by a wild pitch in the second for a 2-0 PVAMU lead. MVSU led 4-2 after two innings but PVAMU made it 4-3 in the fourth on Morris' RBI.
MVSU jumped ahead 6-3 in the fourth but PVAMU added two runs for a 6-5 decision in the fifth. MVSU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-5 lead but PVAMU bust the gate open in the sixth with a seven-run frame that was highlighted by RBIs from Navarro, Woods, Tiffany Robertson and Alexandra Losoya (triple).
Peyton Simms drove in two RBIs in the seventh for a 14-8 lead but PVAMU had to withstand a late MVSU rally as four runs crossed home for the game's final margin.
Arciba finished 4-for-5 with an RBI followed by three hits from Morris and two hits apiece from Losoya and Navarro. Losoya led the way with three RBIs while Hicks and Simms drove in two runs each.
Falls came on in relief to earn the win on the mound.
PVAMU hosts UH-Victoria at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Prairie View, Texas.
