Déjà Vu Strikes Again As Panther Fall In Overtime To Alabama State

BOX SCORE
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M had victory snatched from its hands on Monday night as the team had a pair of offensive and defensive breakdowns in the final 22 seconds during a 90-87 overtime loss to Alabama State.

Unlike Saturday's game, the Panthers had a strong start with an early eight-point lead but Alabama State battled back via an 11-2 run which began a seesaw affair from that point.  From the 14:46 mark to the 9:24 mark, a total of three ties and seven lead changes occurred with the Panthers finally claiming the upper hand as Hershey Robinson logged a trey for a 22-20 lead.  Prairie View A&M pushed it lead to as much as five with 4:53 left but ASU tied it again at 32-all with 1:49 remaining.  Chapman scored three consecutive points from that point as the Panthers held on for a 35-34 halftime advantage.

The second half was a mirror image of the first early on as the lead changed hands five times over a seven-minute span.  ASU went up 49-48 on Jamel Waters' jumper and pushed its lead to as much as nine on three separate occasions from that point.  With the game slipping away, the Panthers battled back as Chapman and John Brisco keyed an 11-2 run to knot the contest at 67-all with 3:28 left.

ASU's Brandon Graham moved them up 68-67 but a jumper from Montrael Scott gave the lead (69-68) back to PVAMU with 2:53 left.  Even though ASU would tie it up on three occasions over the final 2:39, the Panthers held on to the lead before watching it disappear with their own mistakes.

Chapman hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 33 seconds left for a 76-75 lead and after an ASU miss on the ensuing possession, the Panthers turned the ball over with 15 seconds left which led to a PVAMU foul and the go-ahead free throws from ASU's DeMarcus Robinson with 13 seconds left.  PVAMU's Tre Hagood was fouled with three seconds left and forced overtime as he hit 1-of-2 free throws.

In overtime, ASU knotted the contest for the 12th time after two free throws from Waters but Scott answered with a huge triple on the ensuing possession for an 83-80 lead with 3:03 left.  ASU's Bobby Brown answered with a trey of his own for the 83-all tie but Scott countered with his second straight trey for an 86-83 PVAMU lead at the 28-second mark after both teams combined to miss three attempts at the basket.

Waters inched ASU to within 86-85 following a basket slightly inside the three-point line with 28 seconds left but an ASU foul sent Scott to the line five seconds later.   Scott hit 1-of-2 free throws for an 87-85 margin with 23 ticks left but the lead shrunk to 87-86 with 22 seconds left on 1-of-2 free throws by Brown.

With 20 seconds left, Scott missed a pair of free throws which led to a layup by Luther Page and an 88-87 ASU lead.  The Panthers turned the ball over on its next possession and never got a clean look at the basket the rest of the way en route to their sixth straight loss.

Scott led the Panthers with 25 points and five rebounds while Brisco followed with 24 points.  Chapman added 22 points and a team-high seven rebounds in his final game inside the Baby Dome.

With SWAC Tournament play looming, the team will have a short week as they'll play Southern on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.
