PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M's five-game winning streak came to a halt on Monday night as Alabama State claimed an 81-78 victory inside the Baby Dome.
The Lady Panthers got off to an uncharacteristic slow start as Alabama State jumped out to an 11-3 lead slightly past the five-minute mark. PVAMU found its offense over the next few minutes and answered with a 10-1 surge ignited by two three-pointers from Gabrielle Scott. Two minutes later, Prairie View A&M claimed its first lead of the night as Jeanette Jackson scored six consecutive points but the lead was short-lived as Alabama State went back ahead 19-18 at the 9:52 mark.
The lead would flip-flop over the next few minutes as there were four lead changes and one tie. Alabama State regained a 25-22 advantage at the 8:15 mark but the Lady Panthers were right on their heels over the next few minutes as the largest lead ASU would claim was a 28-26 mark with 7:07 remaining.
With 5:57 left, Alabama State broke the game open with a 9-0 run and had its first double digit lead (37-26) of the evening at the 4:05 mark. Five consecutive points from Jackson saw ASU's lead cut to 39-34 but that would be the closest PVAMU would draw as the Lady Hornets claimed a 43-36 halftime lead.
Alabama State led comfortably through the first five minutes as they claimed a 50-43 lead. The roles immediately changed though as Jackson went on a scoring frenzy and scored six of the next 11 points as the Lady Panthers moved ahead 54-52 following Alexus Parker's tip-in at the 11:22 mark. The contest came to a stall from that point as both teams went scoreless over a three minute span. A basket by ASU's Jasmine Peoples broke the drought and knotted the contest at 54-all at the 7:53 mark but PVAMU regained control after two free throws from Asha Hampton-Finch.
The Lady Panthers held on for dear life over the next few minutes as Alabama State tied the contest on four occasions over the next four minutes. Tied at 67-all with 2:58 left in the half, Alabama State's Nakiya Smith hit a pair of free throws for a 69-67 ASU advantage which in turn grew to four points at the 2:43 mark. Parker hit a basket for a two-point deficit but ASU answered with a basket to remain ahead by four (73-69). Two free throws by Jackson and a basket by Parker knotted the game at 73-all with 1:36 left but ASU's Nakiya Smith answered with a basket to reclaim a 75-73 advantage.
The Lady Panthers missed their next two attempts and ASU took advantage at the free throw line as the lead increased to 78-73 with 34 seconds left. Gabrielle Scott cut the deficit to 78-76 with a three-pointer at the 26-second mark and the door was left open as Smith only hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 79-76 ASU lead. PVAMU's Jackson opted for a quick basket and a one-point deficit with 12 seconds left and with PVAMU forced to foul, Smith hit both free throws for the 81-78 lead with eight seconds remaining. The Lady Panthers had one final chance to tie the contest but Gabrielle Scott's trey fell short at the buzzer.
Jackson led the Lady Panthers with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists while Scott added 16. LaReahn Washington added 13 points followed by 12 from Parker.
With SWAC Tournament play looming, the team will have a short week as they'll play Southern on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.
