BOX SCORE
BATON ROUGE, La. – A promising first half by Prairie View A&M turned into a disappointing second half as Southern rolled past the Panthers 91-59 on Thursday evening inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The Panthers had a strong start to open the game as the backcourt of Tre Hagood and John Brisco pushed the team out to a 5-0 lead. SU came charging back and outscored the Panthers 16-4 for a 16-9 lead following Malcolm Miller's trey with 15:09 left.
The defense tightened up for the Panthers from that point which in turn opened up the offense as they went on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes for a 26-18 lead. During the run, redshirt junior guard Andre Adams scored seven points followed by five from Brisco.
Southern's Trelun Banks shot the Jags back into the game with seven consecutive points and a dunk by Yondarius Johnson moved the lead back into SU's hands at 27-26 with 6:12 left. Southern led by as much as four but back-to-back treys and a jumper by Hershey Robinson put PVAMU back ahead 34-33. Prairie View A&M would manage to tie the contest on two occasions from that point but four points by Javan Mitchell in the final 47 seconds moved SU into halftime on top 43-38.
Prairie View A&M had a sluggish start to open the second half as the Jags opened with a 7-0 run in the first three minutes to extend their lead to 50-38 with 17:15 left. The game began to slow on both ends as it took nearly five minutes for the Panthers to score as Demondre Chapman scored the team's first basket of the second half off a putback with 15:41 remaining. Over the next five minutes, the Panthers relied heavily on their defense to hang around as Montrael Scott caught fire and kept the team within single digits as SU led 60-51 with 9:58 left. However, the Panthers would struggle from the field the remainder of the way as SU took advantage of the team's shooting woes to run away with the win.
Robinson led PVAMU with 14 points followed by 13 from Brisco and six rebounds by Scott.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Alcorn State, Miss. for a match-up against the Braves of Alcorn State at 5:00 p.m.
