ALCORN STATE, Miss. - The Prairie View A&M basketball teams close out the 2014 SWAC Regular Season schedule on the road at Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon in a 3 p.m. doubleheader. KPVU 91.3 FM will broadcast both games as seeding is on the line for next week's SWAC Tournament at the Toyota Center in Houston.
WOMEN'S NOTES
The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team prepare for their final SWAC regular season contest this Saturday in Alcorn State, Miss. against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State at 3 p.m.
The Lady Panthers have dropped two straight after a solid five-game winning streak. PVAMU has won nine of its past 13 contests but need to defeat Alcorn State if they want to wrap up the No. 3 seed for next week's SWAC tourney in Houston. Saturday's outcome wouldn't matter as they could clinch the seed with a JSU loss due to holding the tiebreaker. However, a PVAMU loss and JSU win moves PVAMU to the No. 4 seed. Regardless of the seed, PVAMU will open tourney play on Thursday, March 13.
Sophomore post Shamiya Brooks has grabbed five or more rebounds in 15 of the team's 17 SWAC contests this season. She also has recorded 45 blocks on the season for an average of 1.8 per game. She has recorded 29 blocks over the past 12 games and has four career double-doubles.
Alcorn State will most likely open as the No. 8 seed in next week's tournament as they could finish tied for sixth but they don't hold the tiebreaker with either Mississippi Valley State or Grambling State.
Junior guard Jeanette Jackson has doubled her scoring average from last season as she's scoring an average of 19.1 points per outing. She's also the reigning SWAC Player of the Week and a four-time honoree this season. Jackson has already surpassed 1,000 points in her career.
Alcorn State is 51-18 all-time versus PVAMU but PVAMU is 7-1 in the last eight contests against Alcorn State.
The Lady Panthers were picked to finish second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season after capturing their third consecutive NCAA Tournament Berth and SWAC Tournament Championship in 2013.
MEN'S NOTES
The Prairie View A&M Panthers close out the 2014 SWAC Regular Season schedule on the road at Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. PVAMU is trying to avoid its worst finish since 2007-08 in which they logged an 8-22 mark.
The Panthers are coming off a 91-59 loss to Southern on Thursday night and are currently ranked eighth in the SWAC standings. The Panthers are a game behind Jackson State for the seventh seed and would need to defeat ASU on Saturday and hope for a Jackson State loss to finish seventh. A loss on Saturday by PVAMU or a JSU win clinches the eighth seed. PVAMU could end Saturday ranked seventh, eighth or ninth in the SWAC.
Regardless of Saturday's outcome, PVAMU will open SWAC Tourney play on Tuesday with the time determined by the seed.
PVAMU head coach Byron Rimm II is 11-6 lifetime versus Alcorn State and 4-3 when coaching against ASU head coach Luther Riley on the sidelines. At home in his coaching career, Rimm is 22-3 in the Baby Dome versus non-conference foes and 36-27 against SWAC opponents.
The 2013-14 Panther roster returns only one starter, seven letterwinners and adds seven newcomers.
The Panthers were picked to finish fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season. The team finished fifth in the regular season standings last season and fell in the championship of the 2013 SWAC Tournament. Senior post Jules Montgomery was named 2013-14 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
