The PVAMU men's tennis team opened SWAC play with a pair of wins before closing out the week with a 6-1 home loss to Incarnate Word on Friday.
SWAC ROUND-UP
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 4, JACKSON STATE 3
JACKSON, Miss. - The Panthers began the round-up on a positive note with a 4-3 win over Jackson State.
PVAMU swept doubles play as all three of its teams claimed wins for the early 1-0 lead. In No. 1 singles, Jackson Varney battled back after hard-fought second set loss to pick up the win as he knocked off JSU's Kashyap Ashok 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Bruno Snyder earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2 while David Aldaz logged a 6-2, 6-2 decision over JSU which proved to be pivotal as JSU picked up wins at No. 3, 4 and 6.
ALABAMA STATE 4, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 3
JACKSON, Miss. – Match two was the opposite of match one as Alabama State squeaked out a 4-3 win over Prairie View A&M.
The Hornets claimed all three matches in doubles play for the early 1-0 lead and protected the bottom half of the lineup with wins at No. 4, 5 and 6. Varney defeated ASU's Dylan Cleary, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 while Snyder claimed a tough 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5-0) win at No. 2. Daniel Vasquez picked up the final win in singles for PVAMU with a 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (3-0) win at No. 3.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 7, ALABAMA A&M 0
JACKSON, Miss. - PVAMU finished up the round-up with a 7-0 win over Alabama A&M as they claimed the doubles point with a pair of wins followed by wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 to seal the match.
INCARNATE WORD 6, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 1
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - On Friday, the Panthers battled nationally ranked Incarnate Word at home and fell by a 6-1 margin.
UIW claimed the doubles play with three wins as PVAMU's tandem of Varney and Rasaki Gbadamosi had the best match of the day before falling 8-6.
UIW claimed wins in 1-5 singles as Varney fell 6-2, 6-4 followed by a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 2 by Snyder. Daniel Vasquez dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 3 while Carlos McIntyre and Rasaki Gbadamosi dropped 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 decisions at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Aldaz picked up the lone win for the Panthers as he claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
The Panthers return to action on March 28 as they'll participate in the SWAC Challenger.
