Dismal Shooting Performance Dooms Lady Panthers In Regular Season Finale

BOX SCORE

LORMAN, Miss. – A rough shooting performance by the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team haunted them throughout the game as Alcorn State handed them its third straight loss as they claimed a 55-48 win on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.  As a result of the loss and Jackson State's win, the Lady Panthers will open as the No. 4 seed in next week's SWAC Tournament.

Prairie View A&M began the game on the wrong foot as they logged its worst first half since Nov. 13, 2013 at Texas A&M.

PVAMU scored the game's first two points on an Alexus Parker layup and followed it up with 1-of-2 free throws from Jeanette Jackson for the early 3-1 lead.  After that, the Lady Panthers had trouble finding the basket as they missed their next 18 shots until a basket by Jeanette Jackson following an ASU turnover for a 9-7 margin at the 8:16 mark.

Alcorn State pulled away over the next few minutes as they claimed a 21-12 advantage.  The Lady Panthers got back into the game with its defense as a turnover led to a Gabrielle Scott layup and a Taylor Overshown basket closed the gap to 21-18 with 1:46 remaining.  Alcorn State added a free throw for the final score of the half as PVAMU missed its next four shots en route to a 22-18 halftime deficit which was due to a 4-of-30 shooting performance.

Five points by Jackson knotted the contest at 24-all at the 17:37 mark of the second half and the Lady Panthers hung around over the next few minutes despite missing their next seven shots.  Alcorn State attempted to pull away as they outscored PVAMU 14-5 during the next six minutes for the 40-31 advantage.  Prairie View A&M fought back with its backs against the wall and drew to within 42-41 with an 11-2 run at the 7:01 mark.

Prairie View A&M could never get over the hump form that point as they closed to within three points on two occasions but they could never get the timely shot when needed as they closed out the game with a 2-for-13 outing from the field.

Jackson led the way with 21 points and six rebounds while Overshown grabbed seven boards and scored six points.

As a result of the loss and Jackson State's win over Alabama State, the Lady Panthers will open as the No. 4 seed in next week's SWAC Tournament and will face Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Toyota Center in Downtown Houston.
