Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and relied on its defense the rest of the way in a 3-0 softball shutout over Grambling State on Friday afternoon.

Both teams found ways to avoid jams early on as each team left a pair of runners in scoring position in the first two innings.  The Lady Panthers loaded the bases in the fourth but came up short as a runner was thrown out at home coupled with an inning-ending strikeout.

In the fifth, Brenicia Woods led the inning off with a single but was thrown out at second following Jazmine Hicks' fielder's choice.  Alisa Navarro singled following the fielder's choice and Shontel Lopez bust the game open with a hard hit triple to the left field fence.  Alexis Lang scored the game's third run with some nifty base running later that inning which proved to be the final run.

GSU loaded the bases in the sixth but the PVAMU defense came up big as third baseman Rachel Rodriguez tagged out a GSU runner at third.  Lady Panther starter Cally Falls struck out two-of-three in the seventh to end the game.

Falls pitched a four-hitter for her fifth win of the year as she struck out nine.  Woods and Rodriguez both finished 2-for-3 at the plate with Lopez driving in two RBIs.

Both teams close out the series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at the PVAMU Softball Complex.  The team will hold its senior day festivities following the conclusion of game two.
