Lady Panthers Pick Up First SWAC Sweep Of 2014

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

The Prairie View A&M softball team completed its first conference sweep of the season as they defeated Grambling State 8-5 and 4-1 in its home finale at the PVAMU Softball Complex.

Prairie View A&M scored four times in the first inning and held off several late charges by GSU in an 8-5 win during the opener.

The Lady Panthers came out on fire to open the game as they loaded the bases which led to Jazmin Hicks' two-RBI double.  Alisa Navarro and Shontel Lopez closed out the scoring for the Lady Panthers as both hit an RBI for a 4-0 advantage.

GSU struck back with two runs in the second and another in the third to draw within 4-3 but a Lopez RBI double in the bottom of the third increased PVAMU's lead to 5-3.  Brittanie Gardner hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 6-3 advantage but GSU kept charging as they drew to within 6-5 after a two-run sixth.

The Lady Panthers picked up some much-needed insurance runs in the sixth as Brenicia Woods hit an RBI single coupled with Hicks' sacrifice fly.  Grambling State tried to make things interesting in the seventh with a pair of runners but reliever Cally Falls forced two foul outs and a fielder's choice.

Peyton Simms, Gardner, Hicks, Lopez and Jalen Morris had two hits apiece with Hicks and Lopez combining for five RBIs.  Olivia Lacewell picked up the win in 5.1 innings of action.

The Lady Panthers closed out the series in style with a 4-1 win in the series finale.

A GSU error led to an early 1-0 lead in the first by PVAMU but GSU knotted the game at 1-all on a solo homer in the fourth.  In the fifth, Brenicia Woods hit an RBI double followed by Hicks' RBI for a 3-1 advantage.  GSU committed a throwing error on a stolen base attempt which led to the fourth run of the game as Alisa Navarro crossed home.

Woods closed out her final game at PVAMU with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate while Katelyn Den Beste added two hits.  Falls improved to 6-7 as she only allowed four hits with five strikeouts.

The Lady Panthers hit the road next week for their SWAC finale at Arkansas-Pine Bluff beginning on Friday, April 25.
